The document presents a numerical model of rocks and soils using spherical Discrete Elements, also called Distinct Elements. The motion of spherical elements is described by means of equations of rigid body dynamics. Explicit integration in time yields high computational efficiency. Spherical elements interact among one another with contact forces, both in normal and tangential directions. Efficient contact search scheme based on the octree structures has been implemented. Special constitutive model of contact interface taking into account cohesion forces allows us to model fracture and decohesion of materials. Numerical simulation predicts wear of rock cutting tools. The developed numerical algorithm of wear evaluation allows us us to predict evolution of the shape of the tool caused by wear. Results of numerical simulation are validated by comparison with experimental data.

This is a handbook intended to provide guidance on nature-based solutions for supporting water sustainability in peri-urban areas. The reader is presented with an innovative, holistic and operational framework that has been developed through transdisciplinary processes. It also contains detailed guidelines about how to use the framework for a more holistic framing of nature-based solutions for water in the peri-urban and even other contexts. The framework may be used for designing, implementing, and also monitoring and evaluation purposes. The Handbook targets practitioners, researchers or anyone else who shares an interest in these processes.
The authors would like to thank the European Commission and the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (FORMAS), Water Research Commission (WRC) in South Africa, Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness – through the State Research Agency (MINECO–AEI) in Spain & the Research Council of Norway (RCN) for funding in the frame of the collaborative international consortium NATWIP financed under the 2018 Joint Call of the WaterWorks2017 ERA-NET Cofund.

This paper deals with the numerical simulation of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) processes. FSW techniques are used in many industrial applications and particularly in the aeronautic and aerospace industries, where the quality of the joining is of essential importance. The analysis is focused either at global level, considering the full component to be jointed, or locally, studying more in detail the heat a§ected zone (HAZ). The analysis at global (structural component) level is performed deÖning the problem in the Lagrangian setting while, at local level, an apropos kinematic framework which makes use of an e¢ cient combination of Lagrangian (pin), Eulerian (metal sheet) and ALE (stirring zone) descriptions for the di§erent computational sub-domains is introduced for the numerical modeling. As a result, the analysis can deal with complex (non-cylindrical) pin-shapes and the extremely large deformation of the material at the HAZ without requiring any remeshing or remapping tools. A fully coupled thermo-mechanical framework is proposed for the computational modeling of the FSW processes proposed both at local and global level. A staggered algorithm based on an isothermal fractional step method is introduced. To account for the isochoric behavior of the material when the temperature range is close to the melting point or due to the predominant deviatoric deformations induced by the visco-plastic response, a mixed Önite element technology is introduced. The Variational Multi Scale (VMS) method is used to circumvent the LBB stability condition allowing the use of linear/linear P1/P1 interpolations for displacement (or velocity, ALE/Eulerian formulation) and pressure Öelds, respectively. The same stabilization strategy is adopted to tackle the instabilities of the temperature Öeld, inherent characteristic of convective dominated problems (thermal analysis in ALE/Eulerian kinematic framework). At global level, the material behavior is characterized by a thermo-elasto- viscoplastic constitutive model. The analysis at local level is characterized by a rigid thermo-visco-plastic constitutive model. Di§erent thermally coupled (non-Newtonian) áuid-like models as Norton-Ho§, Carreau or Sheppard-Wright, among others are tested. To better understand the material áow pattern in the stirring zone, a (Lagrangian based) particle tracing is carried out while post-processing FSW results. A coupling strategy between the analysis of the process zone nearby the pin-tool (local level analysis) and the simulation carried out for the entire structure to be welded (global level analysis) is implemented to accurately predict the temperature histories and, thereby, the residual stresses in FSW.

Estabilitat estructural -- Models matemàtics
In structural mechanics buckling phenomena often have seriousconsequences as they mean a loss of stability or a shape change of the whole structure. Typical examples for these phenomena are the buckling of rods, plates, beams, arches and shell structures. Further examples for phenomena that are connected with a stability loss are diffuse necking bifurcation problems or the formation of shear bnds in elastic-plastic solids. With the weight opyimization of mechanical components, an important issue in e.g. aeronautics, structures become thinner and thus more susceptible to buckling.

This book collects most of the lecture notes I have developed and I have been using in a course on Continuum Mechanics for the Master of Science Course on Computational Mechanics and the Master Course on Numerical Methods in Engineering taught at the Barcelona School of Civil Engineering, Technical University of Catalonia, UPC BarcelonaTech, in Barcelona, Spain. When the Master of Science Course on Computational Mechanics began, the Director of the Master asked me to take charge and to develop a course on Continuum Mechanics. The course should have around 40-45 class hours and would be scheduled to be taught in the first semester of the first year of the Master. I embarked on this path by designing and developing what has been my flagship and signature course on Continuum Mechanics. This book has been designed as an updated and expanded version of my Continuum Mechanics lecture notes and has been structured in 9 chapters. As an introduction, Chapters 1 and 2 are devoted to Tensor Algebra and Tensor Analysis. Part I of the book includes the next 3 chapters. Chapter 3 is devoted to Nonlinear Kinematics, Chapter 4 deals with Stresses, and Chapter 5 addresses the Fundamental Conservation/Balance Laws. Part II includes the next 4 chapters. Chapter 6 is devoted to Finite Deformation Hyperelasticity, Chapter 7 to Finite Deformation Plasticity, Chapter 8 to Finite Deformation Coupled Thermoplasticity, and Chapter 9 to Finite Deformation Contact Mechanics. The last chapter, Chapter 10, deals with Variational Methods in Solid Mechanics, including coupled thermoplasticity and contact problems. The common feature of Part I is that all the contents are always valid, regardless of the material, be it solid or fluid. At the end of Part I we should be able to set up in local spatial/material form, the fundamental governing equations and inequalities for a Continuum Mechanics problem. The fundamental governing equations and inequalities arise from the fundamental conservation/balance principles and from the constraints imposed by the second law of thermodynamics, and are valid for any material. Part II of the book is devoted to presenting some nonlinear constitutive models for Nonlinear Solid Mechanics, including Finite Deformation Hyperelasticity, Finite Deformation Plasticity, Finite Deformation Coupled Thermoplasticity, and Finite Deformation Contact Mechanics. Constitutive equations are derived within a thermodynamically consistent framework. Finite deformation elastoplasticity models are based on the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient and the notion of an intermediate configuration. Different formulations based on the intermediate configuration, the current or spatial configuration, and the material configuration, are considered. The last chapter is devoted to Variational Methods in Solid Mechanics, a fundamental topic in Computational Mechanics. The book may be used as a text book for a Master’s course on Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics for graduate students in Civil, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Applied Physics, with interest in Continuum Mechanics and Computational Mechanics. I am grateful to my colleagues and friends Jean-Philippe Ponthot at University of Liege, and Mariana Seabra at University of Porto for their careful reading of the manuscript. I hope you enjoy reading the book as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

Continuum mechanics
Mecànica dels medis continus
This book was born with the vocation of being a tool for the training of engineers in continuum mechanics. In fact, it is the fruit of the experience in teaching this discipline during many years at the Civil Engineering School of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC/BarcelonaTech), both in undergraduate degrees (Civil Engineering and Geological Engineering) and postgraduate degrees (Master and PhD courses). Unlike other introductory texts to the mechanics of continuous media, the work presented here is specifically aimed at engineering students. We try to maintain a proper balance between the rigor of the mathematical formulation used and the clarity of the physical principles addressed, although always putting the former at the service of the latter. In this sense, the essential vector and tensor operations use simultaneously the indicial notation (more useful for rigorous mathematical proof) and the compact notation (which allows for a better understanding of the physics of the problem). However, as the text progresses, there is a clear trend towards compact notation in an attempt to focus the reader’s attention on the physical component of continuum mechanics. The text content is intentionally divided into two specific parts, which are presented sequentially. The first part (Chapters 1-5) introduces fundamental and descriptive aspects common to all continuous media (motion, deformation, stress and conservation-balance equations). In the second (Chapters 6 to 11), specific families of the continuous medium are studied, such as solids and fluids, in an approach that starts with the corresponding constitutive equation and ends with the classical formulations of solid mechanics (elastic-linear and elasto-plastic) and fluid mechanics (laminar regime). Finally, a brief incursion into the variational principles (principle of virtual work and minimization of potential energy) is attempted, to provide the initial ingredients needed to solve continuum mechanics problems using numerical methods. This structure allows the use of this text for teaching purposes both in a single course of about 100 teaching hours or as two different courses: the first based on the first five chapters dedicated to the introduction of the fundamentals of continuum mechanics and, the second specifically dedicated to solid and fluid mechanics. The theoretical part in every chapter is followed by a number of solved problems and proposed exercises so as to help the reader in the understanding and consolidation of those theoretical aspects.

This monograph presents 4 lectures on non linear analysis of concrete shells by the finite element method. The lectures were prepared by the author for the course on "Non linear analysis of shells by finite elements" held at the International Center for Mechanics Sciences in Udine, Italy on June 24-28th 1991. The content of the lectures presents an overview of the different aspects involved in the analysis of concrete shells by finite elements. Thus, Lecture 1 introdeuces the basic concepts of the analysis of reinforced concrete shell structures using flat shell and curved degenerated layered shell finite elements. Both the geometric and kinematic assumptions are described in detail together with the respective finite element formulation and the numerical algorithm for non linear elasto-plastic analysis including the effect of moderately large displacements. Lecture 2 presents an overview of the constitutive behaviour of concrete and steel in a form suitable for numerical computations using the finite element models described in previous lecture. The reinforcing steel bars are modelled with a simple elasto-plastic model. Hovewer, two conceptualy different concrete models are presented. The first model is based on elasto-plastic theory to describe the compressive behaviour of concrete, whereas a linear orthotropic elasto-brittle model is used for modelling the cracking behaviour under tensile conditions. This ``elasto-platic-brittle model has been extensively used by Owen and Figueiras and most of the concepts presented emanate from reference [18] of this chapter. The second model is based on the assumptions that both the tensile and compressive behaviour of concrete can be treated under the unified framework of elasto-plasticity theory. This model termed ``plastic-damage model has ben proposed by Lubliner, Oller, Oliver and O\~nate in different publications which main concepts are summarized in the lecture (see refs. [33-38] of this chapter). In Lecture 3 the basic finite element formulation for the analysis of stiffened concrete shells via the use of eccentric beams is described. Finally, in Lecture 4 some examples of applications of the finite element formulations presented to the non-linear analysis of different reinforced concrete shell structures analyzed by different authors are described. Examples included range from the analysis of plain and pre-stressed concrete deep beams, to more sophisticated shell type structures including the nonlinear behaviour of a composite steel-concrete girder bridge and a cryogenic concrete liquid gas tank under severe thermal conditions. This monograph has been written exclusively with didactic purposes. Most of the ideas included in the text have been extracted from research publications by the author and many others. The interested reader will be able to find details on the different subjects treated in the many references included at the end of each chapter.

The DANCERS project through a combination of stakeholder engagement, review of historical projects and programmes and state of the art science has built upon the EUSDR to develop a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) to focus scientific effort across the entire Danube – Danube Delta – Black Sea (DBS) system. The added value of the implementation of this agenda will be a move towards sustainable
development resulting from scientifically grounded and informed decision-based – both integrated across disciplines and the full extent of the DBS system.
The development of the SRIA was achieved using a cross-disciplinary team of scientists who through a series of workshops worked directly with stakeholders from research and education, government and industry to identify their needs and the current opportunities. This was used to inform the scientific research direction to derive current state of the art and this knowledge in conjunction with a review of historical and current research projects and programmes was utilised to effectively shape the SRIA.
The document introduces the issues and challenges involved (Section 1), outlines the approaches used to develop the SRIA (Section 2) and the corresponding results (Section 3) were used to identify twenty one research topics. All of these correlated with at least two or more of the EUSDR Pillars (Connect the Region, Protecting the Environment, Building Prosperity, Strengthening the Region) and are detailed in Section 4.
Overall conclusions on the direction of Research and Innovation in the DBS System and the relevance and potential benefits of implementing research under one or all of the suggested SRIA research topics is included in the list on Section 5.

Due to the relatively large slenderness of plated structures, the proof of adequate buckling resistance is crucial for dimensioning. Plate buckling is a stability problem of a compression-loaded plate and is generally characterized by failure of the structure prior to achieving plastic component resistance. The stability verification of welded plated structures assisted by finite element analysis (FEM) is becoming increasingly prevalent in applied engineering. The rules and examples given in this book might illustrate the correct application of the numerical models and give background information on the FEM-based design of welded plated structures. Aside from technical background information on calculation methods and software requirements, modelling, solution settings, evaluation, and verification as a key part of this manual, benchmark examples and worked examples are given. They not only allow the user to better understand the procedure and the background but can also serve as test examples to prove the validity of their own numerical calculations. We are sure that this manual will contribute to improved knowledge of the application of FEM for the design of plated structures, and thereby enhance the acceptance of FEM design in practice.

Iber is a two-dimensional hydraulic model for the simulation of free surface flow in rivers and estuaries, and the simulation of environmental processes in fluvial hydraulics. Since the release of the first version of Iber, which included a hydrodynamic calculation engine fully coupled with sediment transport processes and turbulence, it has evolved to become a free surface flow modelling tool for highly complex environmental processes. This document presents the developments made for version 3, where the advances are applied mainly in four current research lines: a new urban drainage module, a significant advance in the capabilities of the hydrological process module, a new soil erosion module, and a new module for calculating sediment transport considering non-uniform material (mixtures). Likewise, all the work has been accompanied by a cross-cutting task of improving the interface, both for existing modules and the creation of new windows and menus for new modules aiming to improve the whole workflow.

Dinàmica de fluids -- Mètodes numèrics
In this monograph we have focused on understanding the basic physical principles of multi-fluid flows and the difficulties that arise in their numerical simulation. We have extended the Particle Finite Element Method to problems involving several different fluids with the aim of exploiting the fact that Lagrangian methods are specially well suited for tracking any kind of interfaces. We have developed a numerical scheme able to deal with large jumps in the physical properties (density and viscosity), include surface tension, and accurately represent all types of discontinuities in the flow variables at the interface. The scheme is based on decoupling the nodes position, velocity and pressure variables through the Picard linearization and a pressure segregation method which takes into account the interface conditions. The interface has been defined to be aligned with the moving mesh, so that it remains sharp along time. Furthermore, pressure degrees of freedom have been duplicated at the interface nodes to represent the discontinuity of this variable due to surface tension and variable viscosity, and the mesh has been refined in the vicinity of the interface to improve the accuracy of the computations. We have applied the resulting scheme to several academic and geological problems, such as the two-fluid sloshing, extrusion of viscous fluids, bubble rise and breakup, mixing of magmatic liquids and negatively buoyant jets.

Temps de viatge (Enginyeria de trànsit)
Travel time information is the key indicator of highway management performance and one of the most appreciated inputs for highway users. Despite this relevance, the interest of highway operators in providing approximate travel time information is quite recent. Besides, highway administrations have only recently begun to gather such information as a means to measure the accessibility service provided by the road, in terms of quality and reliability.
In the last century, magnetic loop detectors played a fundamental role in providing traffic volume information and also, with less accuracy, information on average speed and highway occupancy. New traffic monitoring technologies (intelligent cameras, GPS or cell phone tracking, Bluetooth identification, new MeMS detectors, etc.) have appeared in the recent decades and permit considerable improvement in travel time data gathering. Some of the new technologies are cheap (Bluetooth), others are not (cameras); but in any case most of the main highways are still monitored by magnetic loop detectors. It makes sense to use their basic information and enrich it, when needed, with new data sources.
This monograph presents a simple approach for the measurement and short term prediction of highway travel times based on the fusion of inductive loop detector and toll ticket data. The methodology is generic and it is not technologically captive: it could be easily generalized to other equivalent types of data.
Bayesian analysis makes it possible to obtain fused estimates that are more reliable than the original inputs, overcoming some drawbacks of travel time estimations based on unique data sources. The developed methodology adds value and obtains the maximum (in terms of travel time estimation) of the available data, without falling in the recurrent and costly request of additional data needs.
The application of the algorithms to empirical testing in the AP-7 toll highway in Barcelona proves that it is possible to develop an accurate real-time travel time information system on closed toll highways with the existing surveillance equipment. Therefore, highway operators could give this added value to their customers at almost no extra investment.

Materials compostos -- Models matemàtics
Most of the existing materials around us can be considered composite materials, since they are composed by several phases or components at certain spatial scale. The physical and chemical properties of composites, as occurs with structures composed by two or more materials, is de¿ned by the response provided by their constituents. Therefore, a good characterization of the composite requires con-sidering the performance of its components. In the last decades, several methods have been proposed with this approach to characterize composite materials, most of them based on multiscale techniques.

Estructures lleugeres
In this work, membrane and shell structures with large deformations are studied. In the structural part of this work, a new methodology for the analysis of geometrically nonlinear orthotropic membrane and rotation-free shell elements is developed based on the principal fiber orientation of the material. A direct consequence of the fiber orientation strategy is the possibility to analyze initially out-of lane prestressed membrane and shell structures. Additionally, since conventional membrane theory allows compression stresses, a wrinkling algorithm based on modifying the constitutive equation is presented. The structure is modeled with finite elements emerging from the governing equations of elastodynamics.
the fluid part of this work is governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which are modeled by stabilized equal-order interpolation finite elements.
Since the monolithic solution for these equations has the disadvantage that take great computer effort to solve large algebraic system of equations, the fractional step methodology is used to take advantage of the computational efficiency given by the uncoupling of the pressure from the velocity field. In addition, the generalized-time integration scheme for fluids is adapted to be used with the fractional step technique.

Hidrologia -- Models matemàtics
Iber is a software for simulating turbulent free surface unsteady flow and transport processes in shallow water flows. The hydrodynamic module of Iber solves the depth averaged two-dimensional shallow water equations (2D Saint-Venant Equations). A turbulent module allows the user to include the effect of the turbulent stresses in the hydrodynamics. These are evaluated with different depth-averaged turbulence models for shallow waters of different complexity. Additional capabilities include sediment transport modelling, water quality modelling and rainfall-runoff modelling. All the equations of the model are solved in a finite volume non-structured mesh made up of triangle and quadrilateral elements. A more detailed description of the model can be found in Bladé et al. (2014) and the references therein, as well as in the documents included in the Refences section of this document. Iber can be downloaded for free through www.iberaula.com. This document presents the performance of the software Iber in a series of two-dimensional modelling benchmark tests. Some of these tests were developed by the United Kingdom Joint Defra / Environment Agency under Defra’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management R&D program, and have been used to benchmark other 2D free surface flow models, as the 2D version of HEC-RAS. The Defra’s benchmarking report, which includes the comparison of several two-dimensional models, can be downloaded from: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/benchmarking-the-latest-generation-of-2d-hydraulicflood-modelling-packages

Metamaterials
The notion of metamaterials as artificially engineered structures designed to obtain specific material properties, typically unachievable in naturally occurring materials, has captured the attention of the scientific and industrial communities. Among the broad range of applications for such kind of materials, in the field of acoustics, the possibility of creating materials capable of efficiently attenuating noise in target frequency ranges is of utmost importance for a lot of industrial areas. In this context, the so-called locally resonant acoustic metamaterials (LRAMs) can play an important role, as their internal topology can be designed to exhibit huge levels of attenuation in specific frequency regions by taking advantage of internal resonance modes. With a proper, optimized topological design, LRAMs can be used, for instance, to build lightweight and thin noise insulation panels that operate in a low-frequency regime, where standard solutions for effectively attenuating the noise sources require dense and thick materials.
Given the importance of the topological structure in obtaining the desired properties in acoustic metamaterials, the use of novel numerical techniques can be exploited to create a set of computational tools aimed at the analysis and design of optimized solutions. These are based on three fundamental pillars: (1) the multiscale homogenization of complex material structures in the microscale to get a set of effective properties capable of describing the material behavior in the macroscale, (2) the model-order reduction techniques, which are used to decrease the computational cost of heavy computations while still maintaining a sufficient degree of accuracy, and (3) the topology optimization methods that can be employed to obtain optimal configurations with a given set of constraints and a target material behavior. This set of computational tools can be applied to design acoustic metamaterials that are both efficient and practical, i.e. they behave according to their design specifications and can be produced easily, for instance, making use of novel additive manufacturing techniques.

Dinàmica de fluids -- Mètodes numèrics
This work explores the use of stabilized finite element formulations for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to simulate turbulent flow problems. Turbulence is a challenging problem due to its complex and dynamic nature and its simulation if further complicated by the fact that it involves fluid motions at vastly different length and time scales, requiring fine meshes and long simulation times. A solution to this issue is turbulence modeling, in which only the large scale part of the solution is retained and the effect of smaller turbulent motions is represented by a model, which is generally dissipative in nature. In the context of finite element simulations for fluids, a second problem is the apparition of numerical instabilities. These can be avoided by the use of stabilized formulations, in which the problem is modified to ensure that it has a stable solution. Since stabilization methods typically introduce numerical dissipation, the relation between numerical and physical dissipation plays a crucial role in the accuracy of turbulent flow simulations. We investigate this issue by studying the behavior of stabilized finite element formulations based on the Variational Multiscale framework and on Finite Calculus, analyzing the results they provide for well-known turbulent problems, with the final goal of obtaining a method that both ensures numerical stability and introduces physically correct turbulent dissipation. Given that, even with the use of turbulence models, turbulent flow problems require significant computational resources, we also focused on programming and parallel implementation aspects of finite element codes, and in particular in ensuring that our solver can perform efficiently on distributed memory architectures and high-performance computing clusters. Finally, we have developed an adaptive mesh refinement technique to improve the quality of unstructured tetrahedral meshes, again with the goal of enabling the simulation of large turbulent flow problems. This technique combines an error estimator based on Variational Multiscale principles with a simple refinement procedure designed to work in a distributed memory context and we have applied it to the simulation of both turbulent and non-Newtonian flow problems.

The main goal of this work is twofold: to develop the theoretical basis of the FE/FV technique in the framework of the mixed Hu-Washizu variational formulation and to construct efficient rotation-free finite elements for beam, plate and shell analyses. The study has been carried out in two subsequent phases dealing with linear and nonlinear problems, respectively. The facts obtained in each phase of the study have influenced and guided the development for each subsequent phase.

This book summarises the scientific case for the design and structure of a distributed research infrastructure on the Danube – Danube Delta – Black Sea macro system. Current gaps in our understanding of this environmental system are outlined, focussing particularly on the lack of cross-disciplinary research that spans the wide geographical extent of the Danube Basin and Black Sea and our failure, to-date, in synthesising environmental process dynamics at appropriate spatial and temporal scales.
The document details the technology and infrastructure required to meet these demands, focussing on two EU flagship projects: DANUBIUS-RI and DREAM. Together these initiatives have the potential to maximise opportunities for world leading environmental research in the Danube River Basin, the freshwater –marine transitional zone of the Danube Delta, and the Black Sea. This research will have wider impact outside the Danube region and will address current and emerging societal challenges. Moreover, by embracing new and emerging opportunities it will deliver a platform to enable cross-disciplinary research that integrates the environmental science and engineering disciplines with the social and economic sciences thereby advancing our ability to understand and manage dynamic environments such as the Danube – Danube Delta – and Black Sea.

Sistema cardiovascular -- Malalties -- Diagnòstic
The DISHEART project aims at developing a new computer based decision support system (DSS) integrating medical image data, modelling, simulation, computational Grid technologies and artificial intelligence methods for assisting clinical diagnosis and intervention in cardiovascular problems. The RTD goal is to improve and link existing state of the art technologies in order to build a computerised cardiovascular model for the analysis of the heart and blood vessels. The resulting DISHEART DSS interfaces computational biomechanical analysis tools with the information coming from multimodal medical images. The computational model is coupled to an artificial neural network (ANN) based decision model that can be educated for each particular patient with data coming from his/her images and/or analyses. The DISHEART DSS system is validated in trials of clinical diagnosis, surgical intervention and subject-specific design of medical devices in the cardiovascular domain. The DISHEART DSS also contributes to a better understanding of cardiovascular morphology and function as inferred from routine imaging examinations. Four reputable medical centers in Europe took an active role in the validation and dissemination of the DISHEART DSS as well as the elaboration of computational material and medical images. The integrated DISHEART DSS supports health professionals in taking promptly the best possible decision for prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Emphasis was put in the development of userfriendly, fast and reliable tools and interfaces providing access to heterogeneous health information sources, as well as on new methods for decision support and risk analysis. The use of Grid computing technology is essential in order to optimise and distribute the heavy computational work required for physical modelling and numerical simulations and especially for the parametric analysis required for educating the DSS for every particular application. The four end user SMEs participating in the project benefits from the new DISHEART DSS. The companies COMPASS, QUANTECH and Heartcore will market the DSS among public and private organizations related to the cardiovascular field. EndoArt will exploit the DISHEART DSS as a support for enhanced design and production of clinical devices. The partnership was sought in order to gather the maximum complementary of skills for the successful development of the project Disheart DSS, requiring experts in Mechanical sciences, Medical sciences, Informatic, and FEM technique to grow up the testes.

Stainless steel is used for a wide range of structural applications in aggressive environments where reliable performance over long periods with little maintenance is required. In addition, stainless steel has an attractive appearance, is strong yet still light, highly ductile and versatile in terms of manufacturing.
This Design Manual gives design rules for austenitic, duplex and ferritic stainless steels. The rules are aligned to the 2015 amendment of the Eurocode for structural stainless steel, EN 1993-1-4. They cover the design of cross-sections, members, connections and design at elevated temperatures as well as new design methods which exploit the beneficial strain hardening characteristics of stainless steel. Guidance on grade selection, durability and fabrication is also provided. Fifteen design examples are included which illustrate the application of the design rules.

Tunels -- Construcció -- Barcelona
The progressive increment in urban tunneling may generate significant problems. One of the main
concerns is the unavoidable ground movements generated; before, during and after the tunneling
operations. In this context, the objective of this monograph is the study of the ground movements, both
on the surface and at depth, caused by tunnel excavations using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).
Within the scope of TBMs, we can distinguish between tunneling machines for hard ground and shield
machines for excavation in low-strength soils. The shield machines and, specifically, the Earth Pressure
Balance shields, are based on the principle of equilibrium between the tunnel face and the excavated soil
in the front chamber. The presence of the excavated ground in the chamber avoids from instabilities,
especially when excavating soils with low cohesion under water.
An example of EPB tunneling is the case of the Line 9 (under construction) of the Barcelona Metro.
Once the Line will be finished, it would be one of the longest lines in Europe with a total length of 47.8
Km constructed for the most part in an urban setting.
This Line 9 tunnel crosses different types of soils. This monograph specifically refers to the excavation
of Line 9 between Terminal 1 at the Prat airport and the industrial area called “Parc Logistic”. This 14
km- long section of the route is called Section 1 in the construction project of the Line 9 and corresponds
to the stretch between the stations of Terminal T1 and Parc Logístic.
The studied area is located in the Llobregat river delta and it is made up of quaternary deltaic deposits
completely excavated in soft deltaic deposits of mixed soft clays that constitute a quite uniform layer.
Tunneling is performed by two EPB machines of 9.4 m diameter.
An important monitoring system was installed not only in Section 1 but throughout the whole line as
well. The system was devoted to the measurement of the magnitude and distribution of ground
movements before, during and after the passing of the EPB.
The information on the horizontal and vertical movements, at the surface and at depth, is analyzed and
compared with empirical and semi-empirical methods available in the literature. Both the cross-section
and the longitudinal distributions are considered.
For the case of surface settlement troughs, the comparisons are made at two times related to the
excavation process. The first one, called short-term, considers the movements until the tunnel lining has
been installed. The second one, called long-term, considers the movements until the consolidation of the
ground has finished. The settlement distributions have been represented by an inverted Gaussian
distribution curve that has been adjusted using different methods. In addition, the observed settlement
troughs have been approximated by alternative empirical expressions and by equations based on
analytical solutions.
For the case of the vertical and horizontal movement distributions at depth, the same short-term and the
long-term points mentioned above have been considered. Movements at depth have been examined in
ten cross-sections (also called transverse sections) along the line, called Control Sections.
In the same way, the data recorded by vibrating wire piezometers and Casagrande open piezometers have
been analyzed and the variation of the piezometric has been plotted.
The analysis of all the data collected has allowed the comparison between the results of Line 9 Section
1 with forty-five cases of tunnels excavated not only in similar soft soils, but also in sandy soils and in
stiff clays.
Finally, two-dimensional simulation of the excavation has been carried out using the Plaxis finite
element program, using a constitutive model that includes small deformation behavior, the Small Strain
Hardening Soil. The analysis has been able to reproduce satisfactorily the observed movements both in
the short and long term, establishing a useful record for other EPB tunneling projects in similar soft
soils.

The major outcome of this document is a proposal for a new education program for the Danube- Black Sea (DBS) region. In principle the task focuses on different levels of education, namely (i) undergraduate students; (ii) postgraduate students (MSc, PhD); (iii) Postdoctoral fellows; and (iv) scientists. In addition, the requirements of technicians supporting all four groups are addressed within the framework of lifelong learning. Specialised training for professionals working in administrations (environment, navigation) is another goal of this agenda. The proposal for the education agenda is achieved through an analysis of the gaps and opportunities for an integrated approach towards a better alignment of international education and Human Resource development in the Danube Basin. Developments in the DBS include a number of initiatives and activities from before and after the 1990s (the fall of the Iron Curtain). In this context, the document reflects on the challenges including access to education programmes, new developments (including the credit transfer system) and the language requirements necessary for more substantial international cooperation. The document reflects on stakeholder opinions and provides a general discussion of the existing programs in the field of higher education and professional training(...).

This work aims at developing formulations and algorithms where maximum advantage of using Lagrangian finite element fluid formulations can be taken. In particular we concentrate our attention at fluid-structure interaction and thermally coupled applications, most of which originate from practical “real-life” problems. Two fundamental options are investigated - coupling two Lagrangian formulations (e.g. Lagrangian fluid and Lagrangian structure) and coupling the Lagrangian and Eulerian fluid formulations. In the first part of this work the basic concepts of the Lagrangian fluids, the so-called Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) [1], [2] are presented. These include nodal variable storage, mesh re-construction using Delaunay triangulation/tetrahedralization and alpha shape-based method for identification of the computational domain boundaries. This shall serve as a general basis for all the further developments of this work.

Interacció fluid-estructura -- Models matemàtics
Designing large ultra-lightweight structures within a fluid flow, such as inflatable hangars in an atmospheric environment, requires an analysis of the naturally occurring fluid-structure interaction (FSI). To this end multidisciplinary simulation techniques may be used. The latter, though, have to be capable of dealing with complex shapes and large deformations as well as challenging phenomena like wrinkling or folding of the structure. To overcome such problems the method of embedded domains may be used. In this work we discuss a new solution procedure for FSI analyses based on the method of embedded domains. In doing so, we are in particular answering the questions: How to track the interface in the embedded approach, how does the subsequent solution procedure look like and how does both compare to the well-known Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach? In this context a level set technique as well as different mapping and mesh-updating strategies are developed and evaluated. Furthermore the solution procedure of a completely embedded FSI analysis is established and tested using different small- and large-scale examples. All results are finally compared to results from an ALE approach. It is shown that the embedded approach offers a powerful and robust alternative in terms of the FSI analysis of ultra-lightweight structures with complex shapes and large deformations. With regard to the solution accuracy, however, clear restrictions are elaborated.

Progressive fracture in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete, rocks, soils, is often treated as strain softening in continuum damage mechanics. Such constitutive relations favour spurious strain localization and ill-posedness of boundary value problems, and call for some kind of regularization. In the present work, two different approaches are presented: a partially regularized local damage model that adjusts the softening part of a stress-strain law depending on the size of the element, and a fully regularized non-local damage model that introduces the characteristic length as an additional material parameter controlling the size of the fracture process zone. In addition, the strain softening of such models usually results in highly
complex structural responses, including the snap-back type, and thus in this work we will be discussing non-linearity associated to damage modelling, and a global arc-length method for tracing the equilibrium path will be exposed. Furthermore, in the context of non-local damage models it is crucial to work with fine spatial discretizations at the damage progress zone, so that elements are smaller than the characteristic length. In this regard, a meshadaptive technique has been implemented with the purpose of enhancing the efficiency of the numerical analysis. Finally, two classical examples, the three-point bending test, and the single-edge notched beam test, are performed in order to analyse the mesh objectivity of the implemented integral-type non-local damage model, and assess the strengths and limitations of the mesh-adaptive procedure.

The monograph presents recent developments on the solution of high speed compressible flow problems using finite element and finite point (meshless) methods with adaptive refinement, techniques. This work treats two of the main problems of today's problems related to computational fluid dynamics. One problem dealt with is the assured accuracry of a numerical model, at least for the problems which are presented. The other problem which is addressed is the vast amount of time spent in generating (or regenerating) a mes in the design process.

This chapter presents the composite materials applied to Water Current Turbine (WCT) hydrokinetic turbines. Here will be briefly described the features of these turbines, the fluid-dynamic behavior of the rotor, and its structure formed into a composite material. From the structural viewpoint an advanced composite material formulation that allows an appropriate structural design is introduced. The generalized composite formulations here introduced take into account the nonlinear mechanical behavior of the component materials (matrix and fiber), as the local behavior of plasticity and damage, its anisotropy, the fiber matrix debonding, its material composition via a general mixing theory, and also the homogenized structural damage index definition.

Concrete bridges
Precast concrete construction
Ponts de formigó pretesat
The concept of precast segmental bridges is not new: the first application documented was from the mid-1940s, designed by Eugene Freyssinet and built over the river Marne near Luzancy in France, between 1944 and 1946. Although innovative, it also contained traditional wet concrete joints between the members. The impressive breakthrough came slightly later with the introduction of match-cast joints by Jean Muller, first for a bridge near Buffalo (USA) in 1952, and later for a bridge across the River Seine at Choisy le Roi near Paris in 1962. This opened the way for a large number of new developments in terms of design, production approaches and construction techniques, and precast prestressed concrete segmental construction became rapidly one of the most efficient and successful bridge construction methods all over the world. These developments are still evolving, but the interaction between design, production and construction is a critical factor for success: the interaction creates opportunities to optimise the scheme, but at the same time is crucial to ensure safety, especially during construction, when large weights are moved, placed and secured, frequently at substantial heights. Engineers of all disciplines involved should interact during the development and realisation of precast segmental bridge (PSB) schemes, to conclude the optimum method statement and consequently check all the intermediate steps of the method statement in terms of stress, stiffness, stability, production and constructability. With the ongoing development of the PSB concept, and consequently moving limits in terms of dimensions, it was concluded to be appropriate to develop a Guide to good practice for the PSB construction method.
The present report was developed by an integrated team of engineers with roots in design, structural engineering, production and construction, and provides a valuable source of knowledge, experience, recommendations and examples, with particular emphasis on the fib Model Code for Concrete Structures 2010 and fib Bulletins 20, 33, 48 and 75.
