Abstract
The primary objective of the work is the study of auxiliary wind propulsion system using kiting from a comparison with the previous model kite, analyzing their contribution to the economy and sustainability in shipping. This study allows better understanding of these systems by providing the basics for understanding and appreciation. Due to the few information that we had about the SkySails system, this work proposes the bases and previous theoretical concepts for a future project more developed and detailed, because as time passes more studies and new concepts appear. The study shows the necessities and responsibilities of the merchant fleet in systems installing auxiliary wind propulsion or
similar to the same end. The use of renewable energy could be the start of an energy revolution, positive evolution as a society to the dangers of impending climates changes already showing its first effects and consequences. The companies involved, the current market and future prospects of the system, will be mentioned in this work, as well as, will be analyzed the environmental and economic benefits wich can bring to the world's merchant fleet.
Will be differentiated four main chapters: the first chapter presents previously basics of kiteboarding, evolution of the concept throughout history, the system structure, navigation with kites, security, difficulties and technicalities. This first chapter progresses concepts and aims to understand the similarity between the idea and the SkySails kite system.
The second chapter is based on the comprehensive study of the SkySails system by exposing the advantages, components, procedures and functions that can perform. Below it is presented to companies responsible for performing auxiliary propulsion systems with a brief expectation of future. Then the third chapter refers to the supposed effectiveness and profitability of the system. The data provided by the company will be analyzed to know the economic and environmental impact of, and then, will be made a supposed amortization calculating depreciation. Independently, will be exposed the numbers offered by other sources on ocean studies conducted in various vessels, and will be calculated the economic and ecological savings by installing the system. With the information obtained by the
company and other sources, the calculation of a model route between Yokohama and San Francisco is deemed to implement the values and calculations performed by these. In the fourth and final chapter, will be perform the analysis and study of a model route to implement the concepts and conclusions made previously. Then, will be presented a model route between San Francisco (EEUU) and Japan to observe '' in practice '' fuel economy, time, money and tons of greenhouse gases emitted by the vessels MV''AGHIA MARINA '' with SKS C320 system and the ROS-171 ''
Maartje Theadora '' with SKS C160 system.
