The propagation modes in plane electrooptical multilayer waveguides have been calculated. The results have been applied to analyze four layer waveguides. Single mode propagation conditions have been obtained and mode conversion has been studied for that structure as a function of the electrooptical coefficients and the width of the active and intermediate layers.
The former theoretical results have been applied to study a structure. formed by a LiTaO3 substrate on top of which two thin films have been grown, the first one forming an isotropic layer, and the second one, been made of LiNbO3 forming the active layer.
