This thesis document consists of developing and testing a gateway/moving node for a Smart City project based on the concepts of delay tolerant networks (DTN) and opportunistic schemes. The gateway is implemented according to the communication requirements with low-power and capability-constrained sensor nodes and with a machine-to-machine (M2M) platform. It combines wake-up technology and a wireless sensors networks (WSN) standard for communications, a GPS location system and 2G/3G connectivity capabilities. The main idea is to use the gateway location to detect close sensor nodes, that are asleep (low-consumption mode), and wake them up to make the sensors send environmental data, which is collected by the gateway. This data is send later to a remote M2M platform by the gateway, that needs to manage all the software and hardware modules in order to make this system work properly. This implementation part is complemented with a real testbed where performance statistics are generated from and analyzed in this thesis work, evaluating the implementation and giving feasibility reasons for the project. The presented work forms part of the TRESCIMO (Testbeds for Reliable Smart City Machine to Machine Communication) project. This European project that has the aim of creating experimental facilities in the context of Smart Cities dealing with mass urbanization in both developed and developing worlds. These facilities are aimed to investigate the utility of services (e.g. the societal impact) as well as identifying and implementing appropriate architectures for such Smart Cities.
El projecte proposat s'emmarca dintre del projecte europeu TRESCIMO (Testbeds for Reliable Smart City Machine to Machine Communication). Al projecte es pretén definir e implementar una arquitectura de referència per les comunicacions M2M (Màquina a màquina) i , partint d'aquesta arquitectura, realitzar el desplegament d'una solució de monitorització mediambiental per Smart Cities sense infraestructura basada en l'ús de xarxes de sensors (Wireless Sensor Networks), xarxes tolerants al retard (Delay Tolerant Networks) i sistemes de radio wake-up.
