In this study, a reactive extrusion-calendering process was used in order to manufacture OMMT-based (2.5 wt.%) PLA-REX sheets with a nominal thickness of 1 mm. During processing, the properties of the melt were stabilized and enhanced by the addition of 0.5 wt.% of a styrene-acrylic multi-functional-epoxide oligomeric reactive agent. Rheological experiments highlighted the creation of a possible continuous chemical bonding from the MMT organo-modifier to the PD,L-LA matrix. As a result, a better intercalated-dispersed morphology of the filler into the polymer matrix was observed by TEM analysis. Finally, OMMT-based PLA-REX samples showed semi-ductile behaviour under uniaxial tensile loading after one week storage at room temperature.
