The present master thesis is devoted to the analysis of the energy flow in a concentrated solar power plant with regards of the heat transfer fluid. In this work it is analysed the heat transfer capacity of the synthetic oil commonly used in parabolic trough power plants after a few years in operation, aiming to find heat transfer problems due to fouling resistance both in the collector field and in the heat exchangers.
In order to evaluate the presented problematic it is introduced a parametric study in the design of the heat exchangers for the evaluation of the theoretical thermal power output when they are affected by fouling. The same effect is studied for the absorber tubes by performing the energy balance analysis.
Later on it has been found a CSP plant in the south of Spain interested in the project for verifying the previously done theoretical calculations. The HTF properties have been evaluated in a scaled test through oil sampling analysis with the consequent results interpretation.
Finally, after determining the existence of a lower performance in the heat transfer properties on degraded oil and a risk to develop fouling deposits, a technical solution is presented through a filtration process.
These findings prove the efficiency reduction on the heat transfer properties when running the power plant with degraded oil as well as the ability of the filtration media to revert this situation.
