Developed by 3GPP, LTE (Long Term Evolution) is a technology used in mobile communications that provides higher data rates than older technologies. However, because of the higher usage of smartphones during the last years, the data traffic that a base station must be able to manage has increased drastically and it is expected that current networks will be unable to manage all traffic in a near future. Some solutions have been proposed to solve this problem. Ultrasectorization and hyperdensification are two strategies designed to densify existing networks and so solve capacity problems. The first one proposes to maintain existing sites but increasing the number of sectors available in a base station. The other one proposes to create a layer of low-power stations near the user to reduce the distance between base stations and end users. In this project both strategies are analysed by using a simulation-tool designed with Matlab, which allows users to simulate different coverage maps and analyse their results with various statistical tools. Simulations are done in different scenarios and conditions. One is built on non-real conditions, which just gives a theoretical approximation meanwhile the other one is built on real conditions using some cartographic maps of Vienna. Finally, the main objective is to conclude of which strategy gives better results in terms of capacity and throughput in order to analyse the effect of implementing one strategy or other upon a typical trisectorized cellular network.
