In the present paper, two methodologies to obtain flexural and shear crack pattern in concrete elements using distributed optical fiber are proposed. The first has been validated through experimental results of tests carried out in a concrete element instrumented with a distributed
optical fiber system, OBR (Optical Backscattered Reflectometer). First, the OBR tests data were used to obtain the crack width in a flexural reinforced concrete slab. Then, an experimental methodology to obtain a shear crack pattern in partially pre-stressed concrete beams subject to shear forces and instrumented with an OBR system is proposed.
