El objectiu del grup de recerca NERG es el objectiu general de l’enginyeria nuclear, la utilització del coneixement i el mètode científic per a l’obtenció del benefici que per a l’home pot comportar d’utilització de l’energia nuclear de fissió i fusió i de les radiacions ionitzants.

Comprèn dues grans branques: l’energia nuclear de fissió i fusió i les aplicacions de les radiacions ionitzants per a l’industria.

Un dels eixos principals del grup de recerca ha estat i continua essent la seguretat nuclear des de el punt de vista determinista i probabilista (APS), aplicada a:

• Centrals nuclears de II, III i IV generació
• Gestió del combustible irradiat d’alta activitat
• Reactors fusió nuclear (ITER, TJ-II, ASDEX, JET)

El segon eix del grup es la investigació en instrumentació nuclear i detecció aplicat a la vigilància radiològica ambiental.
