Abstract
Short-termsynapticdepression(STD)isaformofsynapticplasticitythathasalargeimpactonnetworkcomputations.ExperimentalresultssuggestthatSTDismodulatedbycorticalactivity,decreasingwithactivityinthenetworkandincreasingduringsilentstates.Here,weexploreddifferentactivity-modulationprotocolsinabiophysicalnetworkmodelforwhichthemodeldisplayedlessSTDwhenthenetworkwasactivethanwhenitwassilent,inagreementwithexperimentalresults.Furthermore,westudiedhowtrainsofsynapticpotentialshadlesserdecayduringperiodsofactivity(UPstates)thanduringsilentperiods(DOWNstates),providingnewexperimentalpredictions.WenexttackledtheinversequestionofwhatistheimpactofmodifyingSTDparametersontheemergentactivityofthenetwork,aquestiondifficulttoanswerexperimentally.Wefoundthatsynapticdepressionofcorticalconnectionshadacriticalroletodeterminetheregimeofrhythmiccorticalactivity.WhilelowSTDresultedinanemergentrhythmicactivitywithshortUPstatesandlongDOWNstates,increasingSTDresultedinlongerandmorefrequentUPstatesinterleavedwithshortsilentperiods.Astillhighersynapticdepressionsetthenetworkintoanon-oscillatoryfiringregimewhereDOWNstatesnolongeroccurred.ThespeedofpropagationofUPstatesalongthenetworkwasnotfoundtobemodulatedbySTDduringtheoscillatoryregime;itremainedrelativelystableoverarangeofvaluesofSTD.Overall,wefoundthatthemutualinteractionsbetweensynapticdepressionandongoingnetworkactivityarecriticaltodeterminethemechanismsthatmodulatecorticalemergentpatterns
