Three-dimensional tactile symbols relief maps for the visually impaired

This study presents the first results of a doctoral thesis carried out on tactile maps and symbols for the guidance of the visually impaired. The fundamental question raised in this paper is whether the haptic and usability reading of these devices can be improved by including three-dimensional tactile symbols. The main working hypothesis that arises is whether it is possible to extend and diversify the range of symbols beyond those currently existing by including three-dimensional tactile symbols. Tactile maps and symbols are mainly characterized by their strong relationship with two-dimensional graphics.
