The understanding of the coupled behaviour of highly active swelling clays is better achieved considering two structural levels and their interactions in the context of a double-porosity model. Hydraulic equilibrium between the two porosity levels is not assumed. Applications to hydration swelling tests of bentonite powderpellets mixtures and to the chemomechanical behaviour of bentonites are presented.
