The paper presents an overview of nuclear waste management and disposal relevant to the
field of Envrronmental Geotechnics. Issues associated with storage and disposal of low-level and medium-level waste are discussed first. Subsequently, the paper focuses on the deep geological disposal of high-level nuclear waste. General strategies and features are presented as well as some considerations concerning suitable geological host media. The topics associated with the design and construction of an underground repository and its performance assessment are then described. The paper concludes with some general considerations concerning the interaction of Environmental Geotechnics and nuclear waste.
