Abstract
For the purpose of this undergraduate thesis, we have made an exhaustive study of the water
supply network in the municipality of Vacarisses. This study is divided into three main
sections. Firstly, we have studied the current situation of water supply networks, describing
their main features. Secondly, we have calculated the recharge capacity of the aquifer of the
major network of the village and last but not least, we have proposed alternatives regarding
the actual collection system.
Through fieldwork, we have described the six water distribution networks of Vacarisses. All
distribution networks have different systems of extraction, storage, distribution and
management. For all of them, we have made graphic schemes. Most of the networks extract
the water from the underground through extraction wells, then storing it in tanks and
distributing it due to gravity using header tanks. The municipal network is managed by the
council itself. This network provides water to more than 75% of the population of the village
and it is composed of four operating wells located in the same area as the urbanization of Can
Serra.
Due to the absence of water in recent years, we wanted to study in detail the recharge and the
water extraction from the aquifer of the municipality. The recharge of the aquifer is
calculated by hydrometeorological balances and values are calibrated using a water balance.
It is assumed that the recharge depends exclusively on rainfall, thus being vulnerable to
weather conditions. Furthermore, water consumption has increased significantly, being in
summer around 2000 m3 /day, largely due to an exponential growth of the population. Since
2008, water consumption has exceeded the average recharge, so we believe that the aquifer
has entered a period of overexploitation.
In order to protect the aquifer, given its high water quality and high performance, we have
proposed alternatives to the current water collection system and improvements to the
network. This alternative could be a direct catchment from the Llobregat River, a connection
from the Ter-Llobregat network or by exploiting a new aquifer located within the
municipality. However, the geographical situation of the municipality does not allow neither
a practical solution nor an economical one at the moment.
