La recerca del grup Icarus se centra en l'àmbit dels vehicles aeris no tripulats, també anomenats UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). Com el seu nom indica aquests aparells no disposen d'un pilot humà a bord. L'objectiu del grup és investigar tecnologies que permetin desenvolupar UAVs de baix cost amb capacitat per realitzar missions de caràcter civil de forma totalment autònoma per tal que puguin actuar en situacions crítiques, D-cub situations (Dull,Dirty,Dangerous).
