Today the materials of construction are in continuous research, seeking to improve their performance. Certainly the cement and building materials generated from it, have been in continuous evolution. One of them occurred a few decades ago, when in an effort to replace harmful asbestos fibers in the fiber-cements started seeking new alternatives. This is one of the reason that the insertion of steel fibers, glass fibers resistant to alkali, PVA fibers, carbon fibers, etc. have been taking place. It was proved that these types of materials have enhance the performance in terms of ductility, flexural strength, tensile strength, toughness, impact resistance and energy absorption capacity. However, nowadays there is a new criteria to be considered, such as sustainability, availability in the environment, recyclability, low power consumption and low CO2 emissions in the processes of production, among others. All of them focused on obtaining products with low impact and eco-friendly. In response vegetable fibers are inexpensive, abundant (in the major part of the planet) and come from renewable sources, constituting a very good option to reinforcement the cement composites. In spite of many investigations, the vegetal fibers still have not been completely incorporated into the fiber-cements in the market, for its lack of durability. Due to the alkalinity of the matrix, the fibers lose their reinforcement ability and in some cases they lose all their capacity. There are two ways to improve the durability of the composites: in the matrix and/or in their reinforcement (vegetal fibers). In this Final Master’s Project, this research is based of the development of façade panels, made with white portland cement and reinforcement with a non-woven of flax and hemp, so these give us the hability of include major volume of long fibers without tangling. Aims to improve the durability of the composite by: reducing alkalinity of the matrix with the addition of a pozzolanic, as the metakaolin; and improve the reinforcement by a pretreatment of “washing and hornification”, to optimize the fiber-matrix adhesion. In this Project were manufactured 6 white panels and 1 yellow panel, which are subjected to durability testing and characterization, based on current regulations (UNE EN 12467:2013).
