dc.description.abstract | Due to the enormous competition between ports, mainly in Europe, only a few ports can be part of the logistic chain between China and Europe. The decisive elements that makes a port more competitive than other are many, but there are some key factors that makes the difference as the location, the accessibility to port facilities, the accessibility to inland markets by road transport, rail transport or inland navigation, the quality of port facilities, the availability of the cranes to manipulate the cargo, the existence of enough regular shipping lines, the product diversification, the high added value freight and the development of the network port. Mediterranean ports have increased their market share in sea traffic around 23-35%, compared with 75% of the ports of northern Europe. Traditionally, freight comes from China and the final destination is the northern ports of Europe. Otherwise, Mediterranean ports can offer a shorter, cheaper and more sustainable route. The routes between China and Mediterranean ports as Barcelona have a greater and more strategic location compared to northern ports. This route offers a time savings of 15-20%, with the respective fuel savings and CO2 emissions, and also the proximity and its ease of access to the hinterlands of Europe and North Africa. The main objective of this final thesis is to analyze the strategies of the Port of Barcelona to improve their competitiveness and position as one of the main ports of the Mediterranean. Be part of the supply chain between Far East and Europe is a key target of the port, and that is why it is also important to establish the relations between China and Barcelona, and the interest of both parts to forge trade ties. Based on the competitiveness factors of a port, the Strategic Plan of the Port of Barcelona and the analysis of the potential of the port to become the southern gateway to Europe of freight from China, the conclusions extracted are about which factors are the most important to improve the competitiveness of the Port of Barcelona. |
