dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this project is to apply the pinch analysis to a chemical production site in order to improve its energy efficiency. Specifically, the present study is focused on the line A of building X at a chemical site. After an exhaustive data collection and process units analysis, the process is modeled on the basis of some assumptions, always emphasizing on thermal aspects. Both mass and energy balances are closed while a data reconciliation and validation is done. Hot and cold streams are defined yielding the composite curves, which allow identifying the temperature pinch point of the system and thus its minimum energy requirement and maximum energy recovery. According to the location of the pinch point, those heat exchangers that are responsible of the energy penalty are identified. Thereby, a new heat load distribution for direct heat recovery is proposed as far as legal and commercial constraints allow it. Ideally, energy savings of a 40% can be achieved by doing some modifications on the present configuration. Finally, other technological solutions are also proposed, leading to a maximum potential energy savings of 55%. Results from the pinch analysis of building Y are also taken into account when proposing new heat recovery opportunities for both buildings.
