Design of a Distribution Operation Using Discrete Event-Based Simulation

Abstract

This Dissertation considers a simulation of a case-study based on realistic data from a distribution operator, considering all the activities and resources involved on the distribution process. To get familiarized with the subject of the project there is a literature review about the main topics such as logistics, distribution chain and simulation. This is followed by the problem characterization and modelling of entities in terms of operation times and conditions. Once all the distribution process is conceptually clear and focused and data collection carried out, the activity cycle diagrams of the system entities and life cycle diagram of the system were designed as much similar to the reality as possible. With all the data collected, information and insides obtained from the cycle diagrams of the system a simulation model of the distribution chain of goods using the event- based software SIMUL8 was developed and tested. The simulation model was applied to a case study based on realistic inputs, several relevant distribution chain configurations and resources allocations. The obtained results show that event based simulation methodology and the SIMUL8 software can work as a valid decision tool to design and operate distribution chains, especially due to the fact it can cope with the inevitable randomness of the real world.
