Abstract
English: In recent decades there have been several studies on the behavior of concrete
subjected to triaxial stress, which have been intended primarily to predict the relationship
between the stresses and strains suffered by the material when subjected to lateral
pressures. These investigations have shown that confinement significantly improves the
mechanical properties of concrete, giving it greater strength and ductility.
Improving concrete properties by confinement has led to more optimal structural
elements and with better performance, especially in the rehabilitation of old structures. For
this reason is very important to understand the behavior of concrete under multiaxial
tension.
Among the various methods to generate concrete confinement that has been
investigated is the one of hydrostatic pressure. This involves inserting a concrete specimen
in a triaxial cell which is filled with incompressible fluid and through hydraulic mechanisms
to make pressure on the fluid which is transferred to the concrete generating multiaxial
pressure on it.
Although multiple investigations have been made about concrete under multiaxial
hydrostatic stress, there is no database that brings together all the experimental data and
fully explores the range of concrete strengths tested, including both normal and high
strength, so as the different levels of confining pressure that can be exercised.
The main objective of this thesis is to collect the most relevant research has been
done on the subject in the last two decades to create a database that includes all the
information presented in this research jointly. A database like this is very important because
it serves as a reference for predicting the behavior of concrete under multiaxial stress for
any range of resistance or confining pressure. Another objective is to evaluate how
accurate are some mathematical models that have been conceived to describe the failure
surface of concrete, which are geometric regions defined by combinations of strains that
cause the failure of this material.
The project consists of extracting all available data on behavior of concrete confined
by hydrostatic pressure of several investigations since 1990 to date, classify it and organize
it based on common criteria to all test programs such as preliminary conditions, test
devices used, preparation of samples, as well as the tests results. Once this database is
obtained it is used to calibrate the failure surface proposed by William and Warnke to see
how appropriate it is to model the behavior of confined concrete and improvements are
established that may lead to a better approximation to the data obtained in the trials. Other
mathematical model options are proposed to obtain the failure surface that best fit the
experimental results.
Finally, the most relevant conclusions of the work are gathered and future research
lines are suggested.
