English: After almost half a century since the launch of the Japanese Shinkansen, the first high speed line, this main of transport has become a rapid transit alternative, safe, reliable and environmentally friendly. That is why its expansion in recent years is enormous and no developed country wants to miss this train. Technological advances have enabled this mean to reach average speeds near 300 km/h, as along the line already operating in China that links the city of Wuhan in Hubei province, with the city of Guangzhou (also known as Canton) in the south of the country, at the end of Pearl River. This allows a direct competition with the plane for mid and long-distance trips and, arguably, improves the performance of private vehicles. As a major emerging power in the world, China has not been an exception and it is planned that upon completion will be the largest national network with about 12,000 km of high speed lines. In fact, by its nature, as its huge population and large distances between their cities, make it an ideal site for insertion of this type of transport. Actually, the network arises from the urgent need for new infrastructure in the country; in fact, the conventional railway system suffers from breakdowns in several of its main lines, both in terms of passenger traffic and freight. Thus, new lines have been drawn (mostly) parallel to these lines overexploited for two main purposes: to allow the movement of passengers through them and segregate it from the freight traffic, which will use the old lines. This will allow to more than doubling the rail capacity of the different corridors. That said, this thesis intends to investigate the need for new infrastructure, locating and evaluating the true potential of each country's existing corridors (studying their population level, passenger and cargo traffic, business or even the income of the inhabitants). In order to study it, has been analyzed both previous infrastructure as each new lines, thoroughly. The high cost is one of the arguments against high speed, so we have tried to make a general assessment of it, to learn basic orders of magnitude, comparing also with the other means of transport. Finally, in contrast to the previous point are the advantages of high speed over safety and the environment. These advantages will be discussed, comparing with other means of transport to see the goodness that implies high speed.
