Design of ring-based optical filters with a gap in the loop

Abstract

English: In this thesis it has been studied optical ring-based filters; to do the analysis it has been done some simulations using the software Matlab for the theoretical model of the filter, and the software RSOFT for a more real approach. First, it has been studied the behaviour of an optical filter constituted by a bus waveguide coupled to a ring with a gap in the loop. Afterwards, it have been done some simulations of a multi stage architecture, where each section is the filter previously studied; in these simulations it has been observed some variations in the frequency behaviour when we change the number of stages and other parameters of the filter. The obtained results show that when a gap is introduced in the loop and we increase the number of stages the selective behaviour of the filter improves, obtaining more attenuation in the rejection band and in the side-lobes of the filter.

Castellano: En esta tesis se ha estudiado los filtros ópticos basados en anillos; para hacer este análisis se han realizado simulaciones a nivel teórico con el software Matlab y a nivel práctico con el programa de simulación RSOFT. Primero se ha estudiado el comportamiento de un filtro óptico constituido por una guía de ondas rectilínea acoplada a un anillo con un corte en este. Posteriormente se ha realizado simulaciones de una arquitectura multi etapa donde cada sección es el filtro estudiado anteriormente; en estas simulaciones se ha observado las variaciones en el comportamiento frecuencial al aumentar el número de etapas y otros parámetros del filtro. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que al introducir el corte en el anillo y aumentar el número de etapas mejora el comportamiento selectivo del filtro, obteniendo más atenuación en la zona de corte y en los lóbulos secundario del filtro.

Català: En aquesta tesis s'ha estudiat els filtres òptics basats en anells; per fer els anàlisis s'han realitzat simulacions a nivell teòric amb el software Matlab i a nivell pràctic utilitzant el programa de simulació RSOFT. Primer de tot s'ha estudiat el comportament d'un filtre òptic constituït per una secció de guia d'ones rectilínia acoblada a un anell amb un tall en aquest. Posteriorment s'ha realitzat simulacions d'una arquitectura multi etapa on cada secció és el filtre esmentat anteriorment; en aquestes simulacions s'ha observat variacions en el comportament freqüencial al augmentar el numero de etapes i altres paràmetres del filtre. Els resultats obtinguts demostren que al introduir el tall en el anell i al augmentar el numero d'etapes milloren el comportament selectiu del filtre, obtenint més atenuació en la zona de tall i en els lòbuls secundaris del filtre.
