(English) FORMULATION OF THE TOPIC.
Visibility at night without contributions of natural light.
Artificial light is still a difficult invention to control, even in our time of advanced technologies. Human visual perception is accustomed to the high levels delivered by natural sunlight. The real problems appear at night, in the nocturnal environment. So: what does it mean to see well at night?
Given the current perspective of projecting lighting under quantitative parameters over qualitative ones, a second thematic line will discuss and put quantity vs. the quality of artificial lighting. From this, the reflection will naturally extend to the three desirable factors to achieve good lighting: Visibility, Comfort and Visual Pleasure. Based on what has been mentioned, the topic of Visual Pleasure will inevitably force us to investigate what are the variables that condition it. From there, Uniformity versus Luminance Contrast appears strongly as the two most relevant.
This Thesis aims to demonstrate the possibility and convenience of refocusing the approaches that, returning to the origins, consider broader objectives and ignore limited operational procedures that today no longer have a reason to exist. Naturally, the Thesis does not intend to provide a total definition of these new approaches and methods, but rather to verify their feasibility and point out the main lines that could contribute to research in lighting technology.
To this end, the research will focus on a specific field of application: artificial lighting in libraries at night without contributions of natural light, moving away from the theoretical field and focusing on case studies supported by the use of the CCD camera and computing as tools for measuring, calculating and evaluating luminance contrast in the readers' visual field.
CENTRAL OBJECTIVES.
• Apply illuminance and luminance measurements to evaluate whether the reading of printed texts with artificial light and without contributions of natural light should be classified or redefined as a very demanding visual task.
• Check the real importance that the lighting factor has for the users of the case studies.
METHODOLOGY AND TYPE OF RESEARCH.
It is practical research that uses the elementary definitions of Lighting Engineering as a conceptual basis: it is not a theoretical or historical thesis, but one that operates from the concepts already established and known to try to discover new aspects from a comparative analysis of cases supported by the combination of different measurement devices.
Measuring and recording in the field both to complete the quantitative digital record and also to collect qualitative information from the user will be the fundamental methodological strategy.
The quantitative measurement will be based in its first stage on a method of measurement and information collection that combines three devices and will begin a second stage of analysis based on a multi-layer method, that is, the initial digital information (CCD camera images) is involved. to build a second type of information that will allow visualizing, analyzing and distinguishing results and relevant dating.; (Español) FORMULACIÓN DEL TEMA.

Gatti, Fabio
(English) The main objective of the research is to provide a development in the technological knowledge of architecture and construction with earth in seismic territory, exploring into the subject of traditional and contemporary earthquake-resistant earth construction systems through the work of the Chilean architect Marcelo Cortés. Investigating and knowing the keys to the operation of construction systems allows to propose ways of improving those that are used today, and to be able to develop, based on these, new solutions.
The Chilean architect can be considered a pioneer in this regard and an international avant-garde expert. Thirty-five years of research and, especially, of built works have allowed him to update traditional raw earth seismic resistant construction techniques into a wide range of works carried out. Among his projects there are some in which the earth experiences its formal freedom for the first time while maintaining an earthquake-resistant structure.
The development of the traditional quincha gave him access to a complete system of structures that he has explored over the years, with a great diversity of variants and construction systems, which have emerged in a wide spectrum of formal possibilities and structural arrangements, demonstrating how the combination of earth and steel makes it possible to create contemporary earthquake-resistant architecture.
This process of constructive intuition and learning through the empirical system "trial and error" have generated other construction systems such as the metalic quincha with folded mesh and the techno-mud. This interest in the earth material, and especially all his symbiosis between designer, researcher and builder, have lead him to investigate other construction systems such as adobe and rammed earth.
The choice of a heuristic methodology derives from the empiricism of Cortés's own work, in which the lack of a mathematical model that demonstrates the scientific validity of his construction systems constitutes the way in which the author of this thesis answers the question: why the construction with earth from Cortés behaved adequately during the 27F earthquake of 2010? The thesis responds to the proposed hypothesis by defining a study method according to the concept of seismic hazard as topology and the concept of vulnerability as typology and tectonics.
Regarding this classification, in the field of life that encompasses the architect's own environment and the sociocultural environment, the seismic vulnerability variables have been identified as the typological and tectonic design configurations of his work. The context refers to the landscape and its topography, the location and its seismic environment. The main factor that characterizes its environment are the characteristics of the 2010 earthquake, the types of soils, the geophysical / geomorphological characteristics of the terrain and the current regulations.
The study of the variables indicated above has been carried out based on heuristic criteria of earthquake resistant design and structural configurations of simple and reinforced earth.
The thesis analyzes the most important aspects of some of his most significant works through a selection of what he himself considers his best work, since most of the projects analyzed were selected by the architect himself.
Regarding the selection of the study cases, analyzed for the study of the context and design variables, a building has been investigated for each reinforced earth construction technique used in the work of Cortés.
Finally, the study of the work of Cortés analyzes the determinants of the relationships between earthquakes, the life of the architect and the construction technique used.

(English) The construction of architecture for industry between 1939 and 1969 in the Barcelona area was a challenge for all those who intervened, since, in a post-war environment with serious economic, technical and cultural limitations, the need arose to build new industrial buildings in Barcelona with new programs such as chemistry, food, electronics or motor and with new needs for large, diaphanous, bright and well ventilated spaces.
Barcelona became a strategic production center for local industrial recovery, but international economic and cultural isolation, as well as the poor construction industry that had altered the civil war, particularly affected the production of the most basic products by construction, and therefore limited the technological possibilities for the construction of these new spaces for work, which required craft, professionalism and above all innovative spirit to its architects to face new challenges.

Development of models to evaluate the potential of building roofs to reduce air pollution: application to the case of Tehran

(English) Environmental protection is a principle of both Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development, underscoring critical issues like greenhouse gases, global warming, and air pollution. Air pollution is a global challenge with severe consequences for the environment. Hence, city managers encounter an urgent need to explore the proper solutions to mitigate air pollution.
This doctoral dissertation addresses air pollution reduction by harnessing the untapped potential of rooftops while focusing on pollutant reducers and taking into account specific characteristics of urban buildings. The study follows a five-phase framework, including initial investigation, feasibility study, solution exploration, sustainability evaluation, and city-scale optimization.
The research method proposed in this thesis is validated for the first time in the context of Tehran, a densely populated and highly air-polluted megacity. The key achievements of this leading application encompass: feasible alternatives, sustainability assessment, optimal solutions, target building groups, and city-scale impact. Firstly, considering sustainability, effectiveness, and viability, the study identifies green roofs (GR) and photovoltaic (PV) systems as feasible rooftop-based alternatives. Second, novel sustainability assessment models are developed, combining methods like the Integrated Value Model for Sustainability Assessment (MIVES), Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats (SWOT), Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), simplified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and sensitivity analysis. These models enable the evaluation of pollutant reducers in terms of their environmental, economic, and social sustainability. The results reveal that the most suitable types of GR and PV are semi-intensive green roofs (SIGR) and building-attached photovoltaics (BAPV). This is while the quantitation analysis discloses that SIGR is capable of reducing 4.8 kg/m2 CO2 and 52.4 g/m2 Particulate Matter (PM), and BAPV has the potential of mitigating 211 kg/m2 CO2 and 1.2 g/m2 PM per year. Third, a compound alternative (CA), combining both GR and PV, is proposed as an optimal solution, effectively surmounting the individual shortcomings of these technologies. The optimization using mathematical patterns unveils more suitability of PV compared to GR for the case of Tehran. In this sense, the most effective combination ratio for the execution phase simplifies to 3:1 (PV:GR). Fourth, a synergistic strategy is adopted to consider optimized pollutant reducers and target buildings simultaneously. Using the Geographic Information System (GIS), the study recommends focusing on residential buildings of medium height in medium surface scale as the ideal targets. Fifth and finally, implementing the optimized CA on selected target buildings provides a significant potential to decrease over 9% of total PM and CO2 emissions from all sources and sectors across Tehran. Furthermore, the study reveals the prospect of transforming selected groups of residential buildings into Zero-PM buildings in the operational phase.
This dissertation provides valuable insights into addressing rooftop-based air pollutant reducer technologies and also offers a systematic approach that can be adapted to various urban contexts.

2024-02-29T19:30:59ZBanirazi Motlagh, Seyed Hamed(English) Environmental protection is a principle of both Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development, underscoring critical issues like greenhouse gases, global warming, and air pollution.
The developed framework, models, and proposed future works, can assist decision-makers in selecting the most appropriate strategies, contributing to cleaner, more sustainable, and resilient urban environments worldwide.

(English) Popular housing in hot and humid areas of Mexico often faces challenges in terms of energy efficiency and comfort due to extreme weather conditions. Humidity is one of the main problems affecting the habitability of these houses.
In this thesis, bioclimatic design strategies that can help reduce humidity in these houses are analyzed, paying special attention to solar shading, ventilation and specific dehumidification techniques, such as pressurization, shallow geothermal and the use of silica gel panels. The research is based on the analysis of different materials and technologies, through simulations and mathematical models, to evaluate their impact on the quality of life of the inhabitants of a case study near the city of Villahermosa, Tabasco.
The results of this research show that the proposed strategies and modifications can be effective in reducing temperature and relative humidity, however, no single strategy, or combination of strategies, can guarantee adequate levels of hygrothermal comfort in extreme climates, such as the one considered in this research. These recommendations, however, could help to significantly improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of these dwellings, by improving not only their comfort, but also their health.
It is concluded that no single strategy guarantees adequate levels of comfort, but the combination of several can approach these levels. Some strategies include increasing the roof height, using false ceilings with air cavities, implementing thermal insulation, modifying window proportions, providing solar protection, promoting constant and cross ventilation, using shallow geothermal energy, dehumidifying pressurization, and using silica gel panels.
These strategies have partial effectiveness and their improvements do not accumulate linearly. The importance of analyzing the specific conditions of each location to determine the optimal combination of strategies is pointed out. An estimate of water efficiency and how these strategies could benefit vulnerable populations around the world is also mentioned. Despite progress, the difficulty of reducing relative humidity in hot and humid climates and the need for continued research in this area is recognized.; (Español) La vivienda popular en zonas cálidas y húmedas de México a menudo enfrenta desafíos en términos de eficiencia energética y confort debido a las condiciones climáticas extremas.

(English) Raw earth provides important environmental benefits, such as low embodied energy, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and infinite reversibility. Today, these already well-known benefits are boosting interest in raw-earth construction to help overcome one of our societies' most pressing challenges: the "climate emergency". Yet, earth can further contribute to building interior comfort in many ways. The study of these other advantages is where this thesis finds its field of research.
To do this, we inquire about atmospheres, in the field of sound atmospheres in particular, which tends to receive little attention in scientific research on raw earth. Through the lens of ambiences, this study allows us to more faithfully capture the complexity of the represented, perceived, and lived modes of raw earth spaces. It also contributes to deepening the yet-to-be-strengthened dialogue among physical data and sensitive data. This is done with the ultimate goal of evaluating the physical and sensitive effects that a natural material like raw earth can bring to users’ quality of life.To find answers to our questions, we study physical data, mainly acoustic data, and sensitive data in two contexts at the same time. Being the first of them based on a case study on existing schools with various user profiles and a set of raw earth implementations. The second compares the same environment with and without raw earth.
Acoustic phenomena research reveals a wide range of potential solutions, depending on the implementation used, the quantity and nature of the fibre, and the surface condition. Along with the gathering of perceptions, the presence of earth can amplify positive effects on how users perceive and experience ambiences. As such, the presence of an earthen wall raises comfort given "natural," "warmth," "relaxing colour," and "cocooning” perceptions as well as due to the "singularity" effect given by human materiality. These sensorial attributions plus prominent seem to reinforce the creation of more pleasant and soothing atmospheres by raw-earth spaces. The usage of raw earth is sometimes linked to a state of physical and psychological relaxation. In the study of confrontations, we find a correlation among the presence of raw earth, regulatory acoustic performance, and user feedback. Nevertheless, the improvement in participants' feelings seems to be more pronounced than the quantified physical improvement.
Ambience research is emerging as a relevant scientific approach to better understand objective and subjective data. We believe that a complementary study of these two worlds is an instrumental for deepening representations of raw-earth constructions and a more thorough understanding of spaces in accordance with the inhabited reality.; (Français) La terre crue présente des valeurs environnementales fortes, notamment une faible énergie grise, une

2024-02-19T08:53:10ZMiranda Santos, Marta(English) Raw earth provides important environmental benefits, such as low embodied energy, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and infinite reversibility.
We believe that a complementary study of these two worlds is an instrumental for deepening representations of raw-earth constructions and a more thorough understanding of spaces in accordance with the inhabited reality.
(English) There is a broad consensus on the need to drive urban intervention public policies with the purpose of promoting more inclusive, sustainable, balanced and diverse cities. Urban intervention is not neutral; it has a significant impact causing changes in the urban context and, at the same time, in the social and economic structure. The mission of correcting urban imbalances fundamentally concerns the public administration.
It is clear that there is room for improvement for public effort towards urban rehabilitation and regeneration processes, where intervention models that gather new instruments and methodologies are being developed.
The main goal of this study is to examine and aim at the improvement of public intervention in urban environments, starting from a critical, empirical and operational perspective. In order to do so, the analysis focuses on the criteria and essential tools generally considered in both the design and subsequent management of public programs.
The framework of the projects is examined in depth, from the context of intervention, the complexity of the public governance and its deficits, the difficulties related to the evaluation its intervention, altogether with an analysis of relevant experiences in Barcelona.
The methodology followed combines a triangulation of theoretical, empirical and a critical vision of experts. It is expected that this strategy the emerging aspects of public policies and strengthens the conclusions derived from the research.
Both, structural and operational malfunction, are evidenced and contradict the principles of efficiency and efficacy that are required for any public performance. In this sense, in urban rehabilitation and regeneration, these dimensions should be considered: the imbalance of processes and charges between administrations in terms of financing of public policies; the deficit of citizen engagement and institutional collaboration towards a sustainable management, as well as the systematic oblivion of the analysis and evaluation which obstructs transparency and collective learning.
As a result of these reflections, some adjustments in the intervention models are proposed focused in fundamental questions of the operations. If the leadership of the urban intervention is public, in consequence, the appropriate use of legal instruments and management models should also be public. Likewise, the consensual management of design in urban intervention should be led. Not every public intervention provides the expected results, making it necessary to evaluate and identify the adverse effects that it collaterally produces.
In a scene in which the capacity of public resources is limited, a holistic transversal vision of public policies of urban rehabilitation and regeneration provides added benefits in terms of their sustainability.

Low-cost intelligent refurbishment of façades : a study of Barcelona public school building façades
Habibi, Saeid
(English) Due to the fact that construction, maintenance, and operation of buildings consume almost 40% of global energy today, architects play a major role in the reduction of world energy consumption. Building’s façades can have a significant and measurable impact on the economic, environmental, and social performances by edifices, and their retrofit is seen as a key solution to the problem of today’s aging building stock. Concerning overheating and the potential loss of internal heat, transparent parts of the building façade have a large effect on the building’s energy consumption. Within this context, the use of intelligent systems on architecture envelopes can fulfill contemporary demands as promising solutions regarding energy efficiency, emissions, or the degree of visual contact in building environments.
In Spain, boom periods of construction combined with typical building styles of each period, have resulted in a large stock of aging educational buildings at risk of structural vacancy and obsolescence. Despite their lack of insulation, high air infiltration, and solar gain, many such edifices from the 1970s-1980s are still in use today. Moreover, the majority of today's buildings will still be in use in 2050 based on the Spanish edifices' annual replacement rate of 3% according to the European Commission.
The main objective of this Ph.D. thesis is to analyze, develop and promote intelligent services to existing façades to optimize these buildings' economic, environmental, and social sustainability performances through a holistic and innovative sustainability assessment model.
To do so, the first phases of this thesis, the author carried out a deep documental investigation on more than 800 research articles regarding intelligent façade systems, advancements in material engineering, user demands, automations, and their sustainability performance following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses reporting standards.
Based on the results from preliminary investigations, different low-cost and environmental-friendly dynamic façades have been prototyped in the context of the Spanish public schools targeting pupils' academic progress through optimizing the lighting and thermal comfort levels. These prototypes have been developed by employing municipal solid waste materials during participatory workshops with school pupils. This concept is expected to promote awareness and better management of our society's critical waste generation by returning waste to the reusing cycle.
From the data collected, researchers found that intelligent façade design and application result from a complex decision-making process. The cost and long-term nature of the investment mean that the façade decision is strategic. Accordingly, the next phase examined the actuality of intelligent façade projects in practice through conducting in-depth exploratory methodologies and tools for analyzing, evaluating, and designing among the incorporation of interdisciplinary experts in the topic. Finally, the last phase experimentally monitored and tested the developed prototypes and other test samples of various waste items.
The findings show that the process of façade retrofit that fulfills the school building functioning, energy performance, emissions, costs, and appearance, requires the realm of the profession. The members involved in the retrofitting projects of public primary school buildings mainly had to make initial façade design decisions based on ideas resulting from cognition and drawing on experience.
This thesis and its subsequent conceptual framework provide a new overview of waste-based construction materials and their introduction to developing intelligent façade technologies, through scientific indexes that can be useful for occupants, builders, architects, and policymakers to have a good understanding of the potential contributions that intelligent façades provide.; (Català) La construcció, el manteniment i funcionament de edificis consumeixen quasi el 40% de l'energia actual, així que els arquitectes tenen un paper fonamental en la reducció del consum energètic.

(English) The use of mixed structures of the most varied types and typologies, mainly in steel and concrete, have been increasingly used in the recent decades. The mechanical advantages of these structures in comparison with conventional reinforced concrete and steel structures working independently, allow to optimize the performance of both components.
Within all the possibilities of composite structures, this investigation focuses on the study of composite columns of circular tubular steel profiles filled with concrete (CFST). CFSTs are increasingly used due to improved structural performance, especially under compression. This is basically due to the confinement effect provided by the pipe, which generally improves the ductility and strength of the concrete fill. Mainly, a series of issues derive from the construction process of these sections, such as, for example, the fact of loading the tube before concreting in preliminary construction stages causes a preloading effort that implies a different response from the section than expected. These problems must be considered in the design process and lead to unwanted preload effects in one of the two components derived from the process itself.
A limited number of studies treat preloading as a design method in itself before being under service loads (active methods) to improve the capabilities of CFST sections. Therefore, the thesis begins by analyzing and comparing 4 different methodologies (2 passive versus 2 active preload methods) describing the potential benefits and consequences of them throughout the section; while sometimes a prestress ratio in a component can improve the overall mechanical response, sometimes it doesn't and even becomes detrimental. The relation of the confinement effect on the core and especially when activated reveals the degree of real improvement of the compressive response of the section in terms of ductility and resistance.
Finally, for the method that has been considered most beneficial, a small experimental campaign was carried out so that there is a first approximation of the behavior of this type of preloaded section.; (Español) El uso de estructuras mixtas de distintos tipos y tipologías, principalmente en acero-hormigón, ha experimentado un aumento creciente durante las últimas décadas.

(English) he present thesis consists in a PhD thesis by compendium of publications. The general objective of the thesis is the analysis of the phenomenon of the Urban Sprawl, on a planetary scale, starting from the hypothesis that it is an unsustainable process. For the development, specific objectives were set that include the evolution of the research through a selection of 20 papers. The objectives are:
a) Analyzing the Urban Sprawl urbanization model, by reviewing the specialized literature;
b) Studying the genesis and evolution
c) Quantify the Urban Sprawl from databases of local, regional and global, raising the question: is the Sprawl a phenomenon of planetary scope?
d) Verify the hypothesis that in Europe, despite having a relatively dense metropolitan structure, there is a pronounced process of Urban Sprawl in the peripheries of large cities
e) Define the “city” in the Sprawl era, defining urban and metropolitan systems based on morphological, economic and functional criteria
f) Develop a methodology for the analysis of the internal structure of metropolises, capable of contrasting the degree of monocentrism and polycentrism of urban and metropolitan systems and verify the hypothesis that a higher degree of polycentrism reduces the degree of Sprawl (+ Polycentrism =-Sprawl)
g) Apply this methodology to the analysis of specific cases, such as the Spanish urban system
h) Apply the above methodology to analyze the efficiency in land consumption of the metropolitan systems of Madrid and Barcelona, Los Angeles and Chicago
i) Analyze the process of urbanization through the land impacted by urbanization on a global scale, through images of night lights, delimiting metropolitan and megalopolitan areas and defining the different landscapes of human settlements
j) Assess suitability of nighttime images to identify urban areas (in relation to rural settlements), and especially the Urban Sprawl, as well as, quantify the retrospective (and prospective) dynamics of the urbanization process (with special attention to China)
k) Evaluate the climatic behavior of dispersed and low-density fabrics in comparison to the rest of urban and rural fabrics and uses;
l) Study the daytime and nighttime Urban Heat Island (UHI), its spatial distribution and climatic performance of the different types of land covers;
m) Study the urban factors that increase the adaptation of cities to global warming, specifically, urban parks as islands of cold in the context of the UHI
n) Analyze the effects of heat waves on health, as well as the effect of urban greenery.
The thesis, on the one hand, confirms the hypothesis of the unsustainability of the Urban Sprawl, since it implies a high consumption of land, in addition to generating unsustainable mobility. In the same way, it implies a fragmented and dispersed urbanization model, higher energy consumption and promotes social segregation. On the other hand, from the perspective of adaptation to climate change, the Urban Sprawl undoubtedly has a better performance, mainly due to the quality and quantity of green areas present in this type of urban fabric (absent in the central and dense city) and its proximity to those rural or forest areas, which are spaces that produce fresh air.
The great challenge of spatial and urban planning is to stop this process of urban expansion without compromising the quality of life, comfort and human health. In this sense, it is necessary to proceed with a radical regeneration of the inherited urban fabrics. The compact city model cannot simply be considered the paradigm of sustainability. It must learn from the green spaces per inhabitant present in the Sprawl.
j) evaluar la capacidad de las luces nocturnas para identificar las áreas urbanas y muy especialmente el Urban Sprawl, así como cuantificar la dinámica retrospectiva (y prospectiva) del proceso de urbanización (con especial atención a China);
k) evaluar el comportamiento climático de los tejidos dispersos y de baja densidad en comparación al resto de tejidos y usos urbanos y rurales;
l) Estudiar la Isla de Calor Urbana (UHI) diurna y nocturna, su distribución espacial y comportamiento climático de los diferentes tipos de cubiertas de suelo;
