We need engaged workers! A structural equation modeling study from the positive organizational psychology in times of COVID-19 in Chile
Mendoza Llanos, Rodolfo; Acuña Hormazábal, Álvaro José; Pons Peregort, Olga
The COVID-19 pandemic has substantially impacted mental health—workers at institutions are not exempt. In our research, from positive organizational psychology, specifically from the healthy and resilient organization (HERO) model, we analyzed the relationship between healthy organizational practices–engagement and workers’ burnout, and evaluated the mediation role of engagement between healthy organizational practices and worker burnout levels during the COVID-19 pandemic, through structural equation models of a cross-sectional survey-based study. We collected data from a sample of 594 Chilean workers. Our results of the correlations and structural equations demonstrate the relationship between PHOs with engagement (ß = 0.51; p < 0.001) and burnout (ß = -0.44; p < 0.001), in addition to the mediating effect of engagement between HOP with burnout (ß = -0.66; p < 0.001). In conclusion, our findings suggest that healthy organizational practices promoted worker engagement and decreased worker burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to the postulates of the HERO model. In addition, we were able to visualize a similar scenario, which showed that burnout during a pandemic decreases when worker engagement mediates the relationship with HOP.

Life satisfaction: A comparative study between informal and formal workers
Acuña Hormazábal, Álvaro José; Pons Peregort, Olga
The life satisfaction of workers is measured by objective and subjective indicators, the latter not always considered by the governments of the countries. The objectives of this research were to analyze the relationship between the perception of having money, free time, health and a peaceful old age with the life satisfaction of informal and formal workers; and to compare the perception of the aforementioned variables, according to the type of worker (informal and formal). The methodological approach was correlational-exploratory, with surveys of 200 workers. The variables correlated as expected for the total sample, that is, positively and significantly between money, free time, health and old age with life satisfaction. When correlations are made by type of workers, the results are different. Through the application of Student's t test, no significant differences were found between the two types of workers, as expected by the political and economic area of Chile, believing that a formal worker and with objective welfare conditions, could present greater satisfaction with life, even in one item of the scale, informal workers have a higher perception. These results contribute to the science of subjective wellbeing and reaffirm its postulates on this side of the world.

Professionalization of safety is gaining some interest in international safety literature, including (post)graduate training and education of safety experts. Different from research, there are hardly any publications and dis-cussions on the quality of (post) graduate safety education in the academic safety literature. This article starts with a short historical picture of safety education. After this picture, a description of the ten (post) graduate safety courses involved is presented with a special reference to the assessment of the quality of these courses. It shows that an internal evaluation of quality, like reactions from trainees, and results from examinations, and tests are presently the main quality indicators. Discussions on how quality assessment can be performed has led to an overview of literature on educational objectives and educational models, and possible options for this assess-ment. The article concludes that the transfer of safety knowledge and skills to companies and organizations is a highly desirable elaboration of the quality concept. But it is also clear that traditional safety indicators can provide no, or only unreliable, information about the degree of this transfer. An overview of possible minor and major accident scenarios of the company or organisation concerned might be a better option, combined with the activities of the trainee to influence and prevent activation of these scenarios

Introducing and Evaluating the Effective Inclusion of Gender Dimension in STEM Higher Education
Peña Carrera, Marta; Olmedo Torre, Noelia; Mas de les Valls Ortiz, Elisabet; Lusa García, Amaia
The need to incorporate the gender dimension in higher education is a central element of gender equality policies within the European Union (EU). When most institutions of higher education have already strengthened and consolidated their curricula, the next challenge is to include and ensure that all people have the same opportunities to progress in education. This study intends to incorporate the gender dimension in teaching through a guide providing recommendations for the introduction of changes that will allow its effective incorporation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas. It will take into account the administration in charge of formulating policies in the field of education, the students, and, mainly, the teaching staff. Its objective is to cover aspects related to the principles of equal opportunities and gender equality in STEM higher education disciplines. For this purpose, 41 volunteer teachers from 8 degrees and master’s degrees from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain participated. To achieve the results of this study, aspects related to social and gender relevance of the subjects, inclusive methodology, classroom management and assessment were considered. As a preliminary step to the development of the guide of recommendations, a teacher’s self-assessment tool and a questionnaire for students to analyze the perception of the gender dimension were developed.

Ergonomics as basis for a decision support system in the printing industry
Mateo Doll, Manuel; Tarral, Marc; Rodríguez Mondelo, Pedro Manuel; Galera Rodrigo, Asun
The newspapers must be printed each night in a very short time, in order to deliver them next morning. A printing plant must perfectly design the production, in which some manual operations as the supplement insertion are critical. The main concerns about this manufacturing step are to determine ergonomically the maximum capacity to setup and feed the line by the workers and improve the knowledge on the input conditions of each supplement. A decision support system to determine the number of hired workers needed for the manual insertion (setup and feeding) was developed for a printing plant. It takes into account the supplement characteristics, ergonomic issues and the production rates. A linear program has been defined and some variants have been studied. The new system led to a 13% increase in productivity, a reduction in cost overruns and an important reduction in labor costs. The system may be used for a short-term staff planning

Eguiguren Huerta, Marc; Llinàs Audet, Francisco Javier; Pons Peregort, Olga
This study describes the status of training in Catalonia’s largecompanies, from an economic and organizational point ofview. The results are based on empirical-descriptive researchconducted with a sample of large and medium-sized businesses. It analyses the organizational structure of the businesses andthe type of organizational structure in relation to training. From the economic point of view it seeks to identify the costof training and the importance assigned to the different levelsof evaluation of that training in the companies. This study alsocompares the status of training in Catalonia’s large companieswith what happens in other countries and regions that mayhave similarly diverse economies. The final conclusionsemphasize factors such as the consolidation of the trainingdepartment within the companies’ organizational structures, the size of the enterprises and their turnover, as key variablesof training provision. Another important feature is the significant differences between the types of organizational structureand the role of training. Lastly, it considers how training andits evaluation impact on the various economic and financialaspects of the companies.

The spanish equality law and the gender balance in the evaluation committees: an opportunity for women’s promotion in higher education
Gonzalez Ramos, Ana Mª; Conesa Carpintero, Ester; Pons Peregort, Olga; Tura Solvas, Marta
Despite advances in gender policy and equality laws in the twenty-first century, women are still a minority in the full professor category in Europe. Some measures establish gender quotas to balance gatekeeper positions, which will supposedly pave the way to make women’s integration into senior higher education positions easier. In Spain, Organic Act 3/20071 of 22 March on effective equality between women and men launched progressive norms governing gender issues, and the Spanish Science and Technology Act (2011) incorporated measures to promote effective equality in academic institutions. This paper evaluates how Spanish evaluation agencies’ compliance with implementing gender balance has affected the composition of evaluation committees and its impact on the advancement of women in science. Findings reveal some positive figures on women’s representation in recent decades, even though gender-balanced committees do not show any clear evidence of causing this effect. There seems to be no correlation between gender-balanced committees and women’s success rates, suggesting intermediate variables affect women’s low participation in competitive submissions. It explores several factors concerning two agencies’ evaluation procedures, such as formality and transparency, direct/multiple gatekeeping processes, the influence of epistemic cultures, cohorts and confidence of female candidates.
