Uncertainty in the family business facing the process of internationalization: literature review and future research agenda
Marín Anglada, Quico; Campa-Planas, Fernando; Hernández Lara, Ana Beatriz
Purpose: This article analyses the Family Business (FB) within the process of
globalization that has been taking place in recent decades. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve this we undertake a description of the importance of FB in the global economy and contrast this with a systematic review of the academic literature, which demonstrates the growing academic interest in the internationalization of the FB. Findings: The literature review highlights the importance of agency and stewardship theories when analyzing the aspects that affect the process of internationalization. These theoretical frameworks require a variety of assumptions and explain how ownership and control of an FB may explain different attitudes towards some short term risks, which could be due to FB politics of internationalization. Research limitations/implications: Finally, we mark out future research lines which will focus on the effect the ownership structure has on the type of internationalization that is undertaken by the FB. Originality/value: This article outlines new lines of literature review in the FB internationalization field, suggesting to the future authors the outstanding journals and topics in this research field

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to study and analyze the public well being policies and its repercussions in the efficacy and efficiency of the companies that give services to dependant people (CNAE 87 and 88 Codes). Design/methodology: For the making of the present study several companies which gives services in countries with different patterns when applying public well being policies have been compared. These countries have been Spain, Germany, UK and Netherlands. The data has been obtained through AMADEUS. The period of the study has been 2008-2012. The variables used are the operating margin (OMR) rate and the rotation assets rate (RAT). Findings: From the results obtained we have not been able to establish a significant statistic relationship between Companies behaviour and public well being policies. Originality/value: Up to date few extracts have been done, in Spain, about the financial behaviour of the companies which give services to the elderly. The business development entails an economic growth which balances with the cost inherent in the elderly population

Purpose: In this study we have analyzed the evolution of the economic and financial structure of family and non-family Catalan firms in a context of a deep economic crisis. The aim of this study is to answer two main questions: identify which characteristics differentiate family firms from non-family firms, and test if these characteristics have allowed them to better weather the economics crisis. Design/methodology: We have analyzed 750 large and medium-sized enterprises from Catalonia (550 family firms and 200 non-family firms) during the period 2008-2012. The data have been taken from the SABI dataset. A one-to-one checking has been taken to classify the firms as family or non-family firms to avoid common classification mistakes. Subsequently, we have classified the firms according to the dimension to provide more robust results. To avoid a sectorial effect on the results, all categories considered are homogeneous in terms of sector. Findings: The results have supported our hypothesis about the family firm’s financing and lead us to conclude that family firms have a different financial structure from non family firms. Specifically, family firms have a higher level of self-financing due to their reduced distribution of dividends. Moreover, family firms show better levels of coverage and liquidity because of its higher capitalization and lower debt in comparison to family firms. These economic and financial characteristics have helped family firms to better weather the crisis, with a lower proportion of loss-making enterprises. Research limitations/implications: In this study we have considered as a family firms those enterprises in which at least one member of the owner family participates in the management. However, some studies affirm that not all the family firms have the same characteristics and suggest that other factors have to be considered in the classification. For this reason, other characteristics should be considered in future developments of this study, for example, the presence or absence of a family member as a CEO, or the age of the company. Furthermore, in this study we have only included large and medium-sized enterprises, so would be interesting analyze whether the results are consistent for a small-firms sample. Originality/value: Some studies have analyzed which characteristics differentiate family firms from non family firms, while other studies have analyzed the effects of the economic crisis on businesses. However, this study combines both approaches and analyzes if these characteristic features have allowed family firms to be better prepared to overcome the economic crisis, a so far understudied issue in the literature

Purpose: The present study reflects the economic and financial analysis of major wine production firms in Catalonia 2008-2012. The wine industry is considered to be a strategic sector within Catalan agribusiness considered the to be first food cluster in Europe according to the Stockholm clusters observatory School of Economics. The study positions these Catalan industries and Spanish within the food sector and presents the main economic and financial indicators to diagnose the health of these companies during the period indicated by analyzing short and long-term results and analysis of changes in equity and cash flows of the wineries. Design/methodology: The data used comes from the statements of the wine industry in the period 2008-2012 and in particular it contains a sample of wine producing companies considered large-level accounting (according to the General Accounting Plan). Catalan companies have a minimum income of € 5.7 million and have minimum assets of € 2,85 million in the sample carried out using descriptive statistics and analysis results and conclusions have been reached. Findings: The study noted that enables wineries in this period do have a healthy economic and financial status, with a small number of companies producing the majority of the sales. Although sales have increased there has been a reduction they in economic performance due to increasied operating expenses in this period. So they don’t have a balanced growth. Research limitations/implications: It would be desirable to extend the sample to small wineries and to get present data to confirm trend changes in economic and financial analysis. Practical implications: It allows us to assess the projection of this sector in recent years in Catalonia in order to take the appropriate economic decisions in this regard. Social implications: The results showed changes are needed in the sector so that Catalan wine companies can maintain their good position. Originality/value: For partnerships, cooperatives and wine companies to give relevant economic information and financial health of wine businesses in this difficult period with instructions help meet the challenges of the future

Montegut Salla, Yolanda; Bastida Vialcanet, Ramon
Purpose: The objective of this study is to analyze the changes made in the cooperative Statutes to adapt the share capital and which have been the economic effects of this adaptation to the economic and financial situation of the co-operatives. Design/methodology: To conduct the study we asked for the Statutes and the financial statements of the co-operatives, for the period 2010-2011, to the Register. First, we have studied the Statutes to revise which articles have been introduced or modified in relation to the new accounting standards. Second, we have created a database with the financial statements of the co-operatives in order to analyze the economic and financial situation through an analysis of the balance sheet data and ratios. Findings: We have identified the percentage of co-operatives that have decided to adapt the Statutes to the accounting normative and the criteria that they have adopted. The results conclude that mainly co-operatives have adapted their Statutes, and the effects of the application of accounting standards adapted to IAS 32 consist of a decrease in equity and an increase in its debt. Research limitations/implications: The difficulty to obtain the financial statements and the Statutes of the co-operatives in Catalonia. Practical and social implications: Since 2011, all co-operatives in Spain must apply accounting standards adapted to IAS 32. The results of this research can be useful for different stakeholders, not only for the co-operatives, but also for other co-operative bodies that can make their appropriate assessments, and for the financial institutions, that can take them into account when they take decisions. Originality/value: There are not many studies that deal with this issue. The present study allows to know what mechanisms have been used for co-operatives to adapt their share capital to the accounting standards and to analyse if this accounting reform affects substantially their patrimonial and economic situation

The use of economic indicators from the Global Reporting Initiative by spanish listed companies
García, María José; Turró, Marta; Amat Salas, Josep Oriol
Purpose: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in companies is widely accepted within today’s business community. However, the intangibility of this concept and the dispersion of related standards and regulations has created a context characterized by lack of homogeneity in the publishing of CSR results. The present study aims to determine the extent to which Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) indicators are used by Spanish listed companies. Design/methodology/approach: An empirical analysis has been performed to asses and evaluate the 2011 CSR reports published by the companies listed on the IBEX-35, the Spanish stock exchange index which includes the most important listed companies. The analysis is centered exclusively on the economic indicators established by the GRI. The methodology used to interpret the results is based on the procedures of multivariate analysis, namely principal components analysis, correlation matrix, and hierarchical clustering. Findings: The results of the study show that although the GRI tool is used extensively within the IBEX-35, the level of performance regarding the parameters established by the GRI varies depending on the studied company and indicator. Research limitations/implications: This study focuses on the biggest Spanish listed companies; thus, the conclusions may differ in other geographic locations, as well as for smaller businesses. Practical implications: This line of research helps to know more about the social reporting policies of big Spanish listed companies. Social implications: The evidence provided by this study helps to know more about the Corporate Social Responsibility policies and sustainability reports and declarations of social and environmental values governing their organizations. Originality/value: This study is the first using principal component analysis in Spanish listed companies focusing in the economic indicators of the GRI
