Corrosion effects on hertzian contact fatigue behavior of a WC-Co cemented carbide
Fargas Ribas, Gemma; Llanes Pitarch, Luis Miguel
The effect of corrosion on the damage induced under cyclic contact loading for a medium-grained WC-6%wtCo hardmetal grade is investigated. Contact fatigue tests are conducted by means of Hertzian indentation techniques. Corrosion damage is introduced in a controlled way by previous immersion of specimens in a stirred acidic medium. Results reveal that corrosion significantly influences the contact fatigue behavior of the material under consideration, in terms of the emergence and evolution of specific failure events: partial/full ring, radial cracks, and grain pull-out, among others. As cycle number increases, damage in the uncorroded condition evolves from partial to full ring cracks. Meanwhile, in the corroded condition, damage evolution is dominated by the appearance of grain pull-out when the number of cycles reaches a certain value. These findings are rationalized on the basis of phase assemblage changes linked to corrosion which are then enhanced by the cyclic nature of the applied loads.

Microstructural and micromechanical characterization of Ti-6Al-4V samples produced by laser cladding
Roa Rovira, Joan Josep; Leunda, Josu; Mateo García, Antonio Manuel
Additive manufacturing of metals is an innovative technology that stimulates much interest. In the particular case of titanium alloys, this technology is nowadays used to produce components, mainly for the aeronautic industry, achieving important weight and cost reduction. This paper deals with the microstructural and micromechanical characterization of small size samples of Ti-6Al-4V manufactured by direct energy deposition. Specifically, the technology employed to produce those samples was laser cladding, with powder as a raw material. The main aim behind this research is to analyze the influence of several manufacturing parameters, such as the laser power and the deposition speed, on the geometrical aspect and the microstructural characteristics of the different samples produced. Also, nano-indentacion and micro-hardness tests have been performed to extract the nano- and the micromechanical response in terms of hardness of the samples.

Small-scale assessment of corrosion-induced damage in hardmetals
Zheng, Yafeng; Fargas Ribas, Gemma; Besharatloo, Hossein; Roa Rovira, Joan Josep; Lavigne, Olivier; Llanes Pitarch, Luis Miguel
In this work, the effect of corrosion-induced damage on the mechanical response of hardmetals was evaluated at small-scale level by means of nanoindentation and nanoscratch. Damage was introduced in a controlled way through immersion in acidic solution. It is found that surface degradation associated with corrosion leads to a strong reduction of hardness and elastic modulus, as compared to non-corroded samples. Similarly, significant differences are observed in nanoscratch response, regarding not only width and depth of tracks but also deformation mechanisms developed as contact load is progressively increased. Damage was already evidenced in corroded surfaces at scratching loads one order of magnitude lower than for virgin specimens. Cracking and fragmentation of individual WC grains, together with chipping of at the track edges were the main deformation and fracture micromechanisms identified. Changes in nanoindentation and nanoscratch response and damage scenario are discussed on the basis of the corrosion-induced changes within the intrinsic microstructural assemblage of hardmetals.

Teaching at University is always a difficult task because it implies too much theoretical lessons while students ask for practical knowledge and Enterprises claim for good junior professionals. Finding an equilibrium among all the interests is challenging but at the same time, it is the key of success. This work shows the experience of teaching in collaboration with companies to achieve a more practical and attractive approach to day-to-day Engineering work while meeting teaching objectives. It is a win-win relationship since it motivates students because they see the direct relationship between their studies and the future job; it also helps teachers to know the knowledge required by engineering companies and, besides, enterprises will have future engineers better trained, already familiar with process and tools. Furthermore, it also increases the collaborations between University and enterprises, which is key to innovate and develop new business models

Sustainability and institutionalization model: the case of the MPIA
Islas Torres, Claudia; Carranza Alcántar, Maria del Rocío; Salán Ballesteros, Maria Núria; Franco Casillas, Sergio
The present text deals in a general way the way in which from the Master in Innovative Processes in Learning (MPIA) that operates as a double degree by the Centro Universitario de Los Altos (CUALTOS) of the University of Guadalajara, in collaboration with the Institute of Sciences of Education of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPCBarcelonaTECH), has tried to promote sustainability as a transversal skill that allows the institutionalization of this topic in the University System. The MPIA trains active teachers who develop their educational practice in different engineering or technological baccalaureates, among other educational centers; and the concern has arisen to propose a model to follow to institutionalize sustainability as a form of change and improvement of the educational context. In this sense, as a first point it is proposed that groups of volunteers can be generated to prepare themselves theoretically and practically with respect to how to pedagogically lead a sustainability project that in turn can be institutionalized [1]. From this group of volunteers will be generated the leaders that would make possible the execution of the model, once institutionalized. To comply with the above, it is necessary to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), since in addition to improving the productivity and efficiency of processes in organizations, they can also contribute to sustainable development by executing public plans and programs, driven by thinking minds that seek to establish clear guidelines that can be executed in the short, medium and long term [2]. To achieve success in the leadership of the institutionalization of the model, it will depend on the educational practices developed as part of the teacher training process, considering the 17 sustainable development objectives proposed by UNESCO [3]

In the present communication, a series of project-based service-learning (PBSL) experiences carried out in the Universitat Jaume I de Castelló will be presented. These experiences have been developed both within undergraduate courses and during bachelor thesis. The presentation will point out how these experiences can serve as a tool for teaching coordination at various levels: horizontal coordination within a year in one degree, coordination between different degrees (engineering or non-engineering) to carry out a project in several Bachelor Thesis, inter-university coordination... The potential of these experiences makes them a very powerful methodological tool that can help not, only the students and the extracurricular agents involved, but also the teaching itself; El aprendizaje-servicio (SL, por sus siglas en inglés) es un método de aprendizaje basado en la experiencia y que responde a una demanda social.

By reviewing the inauguration data of universities around the world, it is easy to see that access has been very different for men and women. Sometimes, this difference is a few decades but centuries in some cases between university inauguration data and when, for the first time, a woman in classroom. By checking about pioneer women in technology, when compared with first men in technology, the differences are much more remarkable. Currently, there are men and women in engineering, all over the world, but population data are still far from-peer percentages. From the data collected in a survey about the first women graduates in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts-Architecture, Math) an animated time line allow to visualize the location of these pioneers over time. With this exercise, it should be possible to visualize how inclusive or conservative our universities have been, when compared with its homonyms from all over the world. Microstructural and metallurgical assessment of the laser-patterned cemented tungsten carbide (WC-CoNi)
Fang, Shiqi; Soldera, Flavio; Rosenkranz, A.; Herrmann, T.; Bähre, Dirk; Llanes Pitarch, Luis Miguel; Mücklich, Frank T.
Cemented carbide is difficult to machine using traditional chip-removal methods due to its hardness. Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is the common method applied to shape cemented carbides because high geometric precision can be achieved. However, some important defects (pores, residual stresses or oxidation products) can be induced due to thermal reactions. Ultra-short pulse laser processing can also provide high precision and meanwhile effectively avoid these defects due to its short laser-matter reaction time. In this paper, three different patterns on WC-CoNi cemented carbides for tribological purposes, namely line-like patterns, dimples and grooves, have been created using different laser set-ups with pulse duration in the range of nanoseconds (10-9s), picoseconds (10-12s) and femtoseconds (10-15s). Microstructural and metallurgical changes of modified surfaces have been studied. Laser scanning microscopy (LSM) is conducted to measure the pattern dimensions. Focused ion beam (FIB) in combination with scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to investigate the microstructural changes of the patterned materials. © 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
