Mendez Perez, Victor
There are several problems around the globe related to water scarcity, energy shortages, deforestation and loss of fertile land, and food security. Climate change is making environmental and social issues arise. Issues such as, changes in the agricultural landscape, increasing population (9 billion is the expected population for 2040), rising food borne illnesses, scarcity of drinking water, and more crop failure due to plant pathogens and insect pests, among other factors make this study specially significant. Vertical farming could be a potencial solution to some of these problems.
Due to these problems the present thesis analyzed vertical farming as a possible solution for the future of food production. The study has used lettuce as an example of what vertical farming could offer. The analysis was focused on the productivity of the vertical farm, the location within the state of Indiana, the water used, the carbon footprint, and the energy needed to run the vertical farm with 100% supplemental LEDs.
The analysis of the data was done using ArcGIS software, and data from the Indianamap website, to create a model that was able to determine the most suitable locations within the State of Indiana. Once the location was determined the author estimated the amount of electrical energy needed to grow lettuce indoors, using LEDs. As well as the energy analysis, the author focused on the water footprint and carbon footprint of the hypothetical vertical farm.
The findings of this thesis are both encouraging and discouraging but they also form a starting point for further research. These results are based on the assumptions, limitations and delimitations of this study. The most suitable locations in the State of Indiana to locate a vertical farm, under the parameters used, are Anderson, Brazil, Columbia city, Connersville, Gary, Mishawaka, and Terre Haute. The use of energy just for lighting is around 133million kWh, which is the equivalent to 12,326 American households of four during a year, the water footprint is 33 times less than conventional crops, which is around 237l H2O/kg of lettuce produced. Although the purpose of this thesis was not to generate a comparison of vertical farm to conventional open field agriculture, important data that could form the foundation for such comparison were generated. These data include the carbon footprint that is 56,258 tones of CO2 per year, which are the emissions made by approximate 3,200 Americans during a year, and the productivity of this vertical farm of 10 story vertical farm and dimensions of 100mx100m with stacked drums would be around 8,482 tones of lettuce /year, enough to satisfy the daily needs of fresh vegetables of more than 100,000 people if only were eating lettuce.
Some of the recommendations for further research are to include social implications into the analysis, as well as a cost benefit economic analysis of vertical farming methods versus conventional open field to determine the economical feasibility of vertical farms, as well as a detailed comparison of methods between vertical farming and conventional farming.

This master thesis seeks to propose an optimization of the technical building code and the way buildings
are constructed. The main objective is to help reduce the energy use and the CO2 emissions from buildings
during its whole lifecycle. This thesis will discuss possible models on how to optimize the design of
Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) using European and international standards. However, as opposed
to the NZEB definition published by the EU, embodied energy and emissions from materials and products
will also be taken into account.
Emissions from a building can be divided in two categories. Emissions from the materials in the
construction phase on one hand, and from operational energy use on the other hand. An important part of
the emissions due to materials occur during the construction phase, whereas emissions related to
operational energy occur little by little every year during operational years. But it is important to count
emissions from materials during the operational years, which will occur when the building is maintained,
repaired and refurbished. The frequency of replacing the various components is shown in the last chapter.
It is also important to take into account end-of-life and waste handling of substituted products. Whether
operational energy or embodied energy in materials contributes most to buildings emissions depends on
the choice of materials and products, the choice and availability of energy supply and the energy
performance of the building envelope. Local climate conditions and available local energy sources also
play a very important part.
A shift in focus from operational energy use to lifecycle energy use could help us make better design
decisions for our buildings. If the aim is to reduce the overall greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the
environmental impact over the lifecycle of a building, one could argue that it could be more efficient to
use less and locally produced construction products, rather than having high weight and volume products
being transported across the globe. By comparing LCA assessments and calculated energy need over the
lifecycle we can optimize building design and hereby reduce the overall greenhouse gas emissions.

Sustainable development is a key change for nowadays society to prevent future problems. Consequently, the role of engineers has to be modified in order to acquire sustainable competences for their projects. At this point, Life Cycle Assessment methodology can be useful for Sustainability Education as it provides a holistic view. For the future engineering students, LCA methodology will complement their knowledge, making them able to analyze projects looking at environment, society and economy. The capacity of work thinking about environment, society and economy will allow engineering students to develop their work taking into account all impacts generated. Therefore, future engineering generations will conduct us towards sustainable development.
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how Life Cycle Assessment methodology can be established as an educational support for Sustainability Education. Moreover, a LCA tool analysis has been conducted in order to determine which LCA tools can be helpful for the achievement of sustainability knowledge by engineering students.
The thesis has been divided into two main parts. First part analyses and provides a Life Cycle Assessment Guide for engineering students, explaining the methodology step by step for the development of a normalized LCA. Second part it’s an analysis of available LCA tools to determine if they are viable, or not, to introduce LCA methodology to engineering students. After the development of these parts, conclusions have been conducted by the analysis of the obtained results.
The conclusion of the thesis is that LCA methodology can be helpful for Sustainability Education purpose. Conversely, there is not an ideal LCA tool to satisfy this need, but some of them can fit the intended objectives.

Summers, Brandon James
The aim of this investigation is to measure holistically all of the components of the design, planning, installation and implementation of a photovoltaic system on the island of Hawaii in the state of Hawaii. The system size will be defined as 5 megawatts in order to make the project feasible considering the amount of available land that is on the island. The reason for this thesis in the increase in energy prices from the public utility, HELCO, and the emissions associated with their energy production.
This thesis first delves into an investigation of the existing global push for renewable energies and a focus on the current case in Hawaii, mainly on the island of Hawaii, also known as the big island. By using existing knowledge and studies by other professionals and academics a decision will be made to install a solar farm on the big island of Hawaii. As stated in the beginning of this abstract the size of the farm will be that of 5 megawatts and will be tied into the existing local electricity grid at with a net-metering agreement to sell back the energy produced.
By designing and installing a 5 megawatts system the author will then attempt to associate a carbon emission to the entire project; this is including transportation, production of materials and any other associated aspect deemed significant for the purpose of the study and research.
Financial, environmental and social aspects of the projects will be evaluated in qualitative and quantitative terms to address the case of renewable energy having more integrated costs besides the financial side in order to establish a better understanding of investment in renewables, specifically photovoltaic energy.

Costa Echaniz, Oriol
Current projections indicate that by 2050, two in every three people will live in urban areas, and that cities will accommodate 3 billion people during this period. Cities are consuming three-quarters of the world's energy and causing three-quarters of global pollution. To reduce these impacts, new technologies have been considered in the development of smart sustainable cities, but technology has not always favoured the idea of sustainable consumption. To address this issue, we have aimed to focus on identifying the role of sustainable consumption within implementations of smart cities’ projects across Europe.
We have selected a set of smart city projects in 76 cities in Europe from CONCERTO initiatives, Mapping Smart Cities in Europe, Energy Study for the Stockholm Region and Joint European Support for Sustainable Investment in City Areas and classified them according to: smart governance, smart mobility, smart living, smart environment, smart citizens and smart economy. Furthermore, we established a number of categories for the classification of the evaluated projects based on their relevance to sustainable consumption, and considered several solutions for the integration of sustainable consumption in smart sustainable cities.
The results show that in 18.9% of the projects, sustainable consumption is not relevant at all. The second classification shows the percentage of the remaining categories where sustainable consumption is relevant; 8.3% consider sustainable consumption as relevant even though it was not implemented in the project. These cities aim to achieve a higher level of sustainable consumption, which is expected to be included in future projects. If they keep themselves in this category, their behavioural consumption patterns will not change and the impact of citizens on the cities will remain the same. The majority of the projects, 54.2%, implemented technology to reduce consumption but if the projects do not coincide with the behaviour of citizens, a big rebound effect will occur. 37.5% of the projects consider relevant sustainable consumption to its full potential and this can change citizen’s behaviour.
In conclusion, sustainable consumption is relevant in most of the projects analysed, with new technologies available to help energy savings and reduction of our consumption. However, if there is a lack of smart consumption from the citizens, the technologies available might not be sufficient and consumption could increase. One quarter of the analysed smart cities projects still do not consider the consumption behaviour of the citizens. This can be changed through campaigns and explanations targeting the population on how to manage and reduce energy and resource consumption. To reduce the negative impact of the cities’ growth, projects considering smart sustainable cities need to integrate sustainable consumption policies that account for citizens' behaviour.
