Bridge capacity assessment by combined proof-loading and WIM data

Abstract

Proof loading of bridges is a powerful tool in the capacity assessment of existing bridges. The idea is to load the bridge up to a certain level in order to guarantee the safety of the bridge versus the normal traffic. The key issue in the process is how to decide on the maximum load to be introduced during the test taking into account that the bridge can not be damaged. However, to guarantee the safely passage of the traffic, it is mandatory to achieve a minimum load depending on the level of the traffic action. Therefore, accurate WIM data for the specific bridge under test is of interest for an appropriate execution and definition of the target proof load. These issues have been considered and combined into the ARCHES project to derive proof-load factors for existing bridges located in the New Member States of the European Union.
