Improving symbolic language comprehension

Title: Improving symbolic language comprehension
Authors: Alsina Aubach, Montserrat; Bonet Dalmau, Jordi
Abstract: We focus on the goal of “Handling mathematical symbols and formalism” through the methodology of Content and Language Integrated Learning.
The use of foreign language highlights, and possibly increases, the difficulties in the point of mathematical competence, but it can also be used to fix them. That is, making explicit the equivalence between formal and
verbal language could improve symbolic language comprehension.
Multilingual Formulae, an on -line resource at http://mformulae.epsem.upc.edu, is designed to give support in that direction, as equivalence is not found explicitly in textbooks or research papers.
It contains sets of formulas with the corresponding written and oral version in several languages.
The project, conducted by professors at the UPC Engineering School at Manresa Campus,
is addressed to lecturers and students as a support to ensure effective communication
when both Symbolic and Foreign language are used.

Title: Leakage localization in water networks using fuzzy logic
Authors: Sanz Estapé, Gerard; Pérez Magrané, Ramon; Escobet Canal, Antoni
Abstract: This paper presents a methodology for leakage
localization using FIR (Fuzzy Inductive Reasoning). A real water network situated in Barcelona has been subdivided in zones which could contain a leakage. Two sensors measure
pressures on two separated points of the network. A faulty fuzzy model for each zone and sensor is generated. Test data have been used for classification of leakages in order to evaluate how this methodology helps in leakage localization. Results are compared with another isolation methodology. All the work has been done using simulations carried out by EPANET connected with Matlab. FIR applications used are programmed in Matlab
too.

Authors: Bonet Dalmau, Jordi; Alsina Aubach, Montserrat
Abstract: In this paper, we describe how an on-line resource, primarily intended to improve the proficiency in a foreign language, can also facilitate the understanding of the symbolic language in an engineering degree course. We think that thanks to the use of this resource, a course in an engineering degree
can tackle both the challenge of teaching symbolic language to non-native speakers and the challenge of doing this without losing insight into the concepts that appear in the course.

Title: Health aware control and model-based prognosis
Authors: Escobet Canal, Teresa; Puig Cayuela, Vicenç; Nejjari Akhi-Elarab, Fatiha
Abstract: This paper presents a novel methodology named Health-Aware Control (HAC) system, that integrates System Health Monitoring (SHM), Control and Prognosis. This new approach based on both current and future health state estimates, provided by the prognosis module, takes into account the system’s health information in the control objectives. In this way, the control actions are generated to fulfill the control goals and, at the same time, to extend the life of the system components. To illustrate the performance of the proposed approach, a conveyor belt system that uses an AC electrical motor to move a cart from one end to the other is used.

Title: Automatic design of robust PID controllers based on QFT specifications
Authors: Comasòlivas Font, Ramon; Escobet Canal, Teresa; Quevedo Casín, Joseba Jokin
Abstract: This paper proposes an optimization algorithm for the automatic design of robust PID controllers using Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) specifications. The proposed algorithm is based on a criterion to minimize the energy of the control effort. To illustrate the methodology, the pitch angle of a laboratory helicopter is used as a model application with structured uncertainty. The results show that the design of robust controller can be formulated using an objective function and a number of restrictions that are developed as specifications.

Title: Identification of component deviations in analog circuits using digital signatures
Authors: Gómez Pau, Álvaro; Sanahuja Moliner, Ricard; Balado Suárez, Luz María; Figueras Pàmies, Joan
Abstract: Analog circuits component diagnosis is a challenging
task requiring expensive resources. This paper presents a low
cost method to identify deviations in multiple component values
using a precharacterisation of the impact of the deviations on
the digital signatures for a set of input excitations. The method
predicts several circuit under diagnosis (CUD) deviations by
mapping them to a scalar value that indicates the discrepancy
of the defective and golden digital signatures. Input excitation
consists of a small set of sinusoidal signals with different
frequencies. A digital signature is generated for every excitation
set and compared to the golden response. The scalar discrepancy
values are used to obtain the component deviations of the CUD.
In order to generate the signatures, a CMOS monitor circuit
has been designed and fabricated. The method is applied to
the identification of capacitance deviations in a Biquad filter.
Simulated results show the possibilities of the proposal

Authors: Vicente Rodrigo, Jesús; Pindado Rico, Rafael; Martínez Teixidor, Inmaculada
Abstract: The use of the Walsh transform in DC-AC PWM
waveform generation allows the calculation of the switching
angles by means of linear equations which depend on the
fundamental amplitude. However, when it is needed a wide
regulation of the fundamental amplitude, conventional
application of Walsh transform forces to switch among different

this paper it is described an advanced method to obtain the
switching angles that permits full regulation of the fundamental
amplitude, with only a switching interval vector, in single phase
systems. The paper shows Matlab simulation results that proof

Authors: Escobet Canal, Teresa; Giralt Mas, Ma.
objetivos a conseguir. Se describen alguna de las actividades propuestas.

Authors: Giralt Mas, Ma.
