Title: Energy-efficiency and security issues in the Cisco Nexus virtual distributed switching
Authors: Peterson, Benjamin; Ricciardi, Sergio; Nin Guerrero, Jordi
Abstract: Virtualization technologies have brought with them the promise of increased security and energy saving. Such was the case with the Cisco Nexus virtual switching environment. However, possible security issues of this environment have not been evaluated and the achievable energy savings have not been quantified yet. In particular, it was necessary to investigate whether the security vulnerabilities existing in physical switches had persisted into the virtual environment. This paper provides an evaluation of the energy saving and an analysis of the security implications of the Cisco Nexus virtual distributed switching environment.

Title: Digital rights and privacy policies management as a service
Authors: Delgado Mercè, Jaime; Llorente Viejo, Silvia; Rodríguez Luna, Eva
Abstract: Controlling, protecting and managing access to multimedia content could be a difficult task if a system was not prepared for it. To solve this situation minimizing the impact on the existing system, we propose the use of a modular architecture which provides digital rights and privacy policies management features. It can be integrated just invoking some web service calls, depending on which services are needed. To show its use, we present several scenarios where we have successfully integrated it, like distribution of content for digital terrestrial television broadcasting and access to personal health information.

Authors: Maroñas Borras, Xavier; Llorente Viejo, Silvia; Rodríguez Luna, Eva; Delgado Mercè, Jaime
Abstract: New mobile devices (pda’s, tablets) permit the implementation of new business models as they are always connected and provide multimedia capabilities for capturing images, videos, music or even conversations. Together with an architecture for the secure management and distribution of multimedia content called MIPAMS, we propose a mobile business model with the implementation of a mobile application based on iOS (Apple operating system for mobile devices) for publishing added value content captured with a mobile device.

Title: Standards for query formalization in mobile visual search
Authors: Tous Liesa, Rubén; Delgado Mercè, Jaime
Abstract: The research around visual search is gaining relevance due to the evolution in the generation and usage of digital images. A signifi cant push comes from the mobile visual search topic, due to the widespread
proliferation of camera enabled mobile devices. The new scenarios are increasing the urgency of novel solutions for challenging problems such as the effi cient coding of compact visual descriptors and the interoperability of distributed visual search query interfaces. Currently, almost
every visual search service off ers a different retrieval interface and image
metadata description format, preventing unified and effi cient access. In this context, standardization groups such as ISO/IEC SC29/WG11 (MPEG) and ISO/IEC SC29/WG1 (JPEG) have been working to create
uni fied interfaces for image repositories. In one hand, MPEG provides the ISO/IEC 15938-12 (MPEG Query Format, MPQF), which standardizes a query language for multimedia repositories and has also started an activity
for standardizing compact descriptors for visual search (CDVS). On the other hand, JPEG is now finishing the ISO/IEC 24800 (JPSearch), which provides solutions to the image metadata interoperability problem.
This paper analyzes how these standardization activities can be combined to satisfy the requirements posed by the mobile visual search scenario, which are their limitations and which are the necessary actions to be taken by the standardization committees in order to overcome them.

Authors: Nin Guerrero, Jordi; Pont Tuset, Jordi; Medrano Gracia, Pau; Larriba Pey, Josep; Muntés Mulero, Víctor
Abstract: The amount of confidential information accessible through the Internet is growing continuously. In this scenario, the improvement of anonymizing methods becomes crucial to avoid revealing sensible information of individuals. Among several protection methods proposed, those based on the use of linear regressions are widely utilized. However, there is not a reason to assume that linear regression is better than using more complex polynomial regressions. In this paper, we present PoROP-k, a family of anonymizing methods able to protect a data set using polynomial regressions. We show that PoROP-k not only reduces the loss of information, but it also obtains a better level of protection compared to previous proposals based on linear regressions.

Title: On method-specific record linkage for risk assessment
Authors: Nin Guerrero, Jordi; Herranz Sotoca, Javier; Torra i Reventós, Vicenç
Abstract: Nowadays, the need for privacy motivates the use of methods that permit us to protect a microdata file both minimizing the disclosure risk and preserving the statistical utility. Nevertheless, research is usually focused on how data utility is preserved, and much less research effort is dedicated to the study of the tools that an intruder might use to compromise the privacy of the data or, in other words, to increase the disclosure risk. Record linkage is a standard mechanism used to measure the disclosure risk of a microdata protection method. In this paper we present some improvements for the (standard) distance based record linkage. In particular, we test our improvements to evaluate the disclosure risk of rank swapping, which is higher than what was believed up to now. We will also present the results of the application of this approach to microaggregation.

Authors: Gallego Fernández, María Isabel; Torra Bitlloch, Immaculada; Villas Espitia, Francisco Angel; Giner, Elisabet; Morte, Joaquim

Semantic blocking for record linkage

Title: Semantic blocking for record linkage
Authors: Nin Guerrero, Jordi; Muntés Mulero, Víctor; Martínez Bazán, Norbert; Larriba Pey, Josep
Abstract: Record Linkage (RL) is an important component of data cleaning and integration and data processing in general. For years, many efforts have focused on improving the performance of the RL process, either by reducing the number of record comparisons or reducing the number of attribute comparisons, which reduces the computational time, but increases the amount of error. However, the real bottleneck of RL is the post-process, where the results have to be reviewed by experts that decide which pairs or groups of records are real links and which are false hits.
In this paper we show that exploiting the semantic relationships (e.g. foreign key), established between one or more data sources, makes it possible to find a new sort of semantic blocking method that improves the number of hits and reduces the amount of review effort.

A mobile Scenario for Electronic Publishing based on the MIPAMS Architecture

Title: A mobile Scenario for Electronic Publishing based on the MIPAMS Architecture
Authors: Delgado Mercè, Jaime; Llorente Viejo, Silvia; Rodríguez Luna, Eva; Torres Padrosa, Víctor
Abstract: This paper describes several scenarios for the management of digital media, focusing on
electronic publishing from mobile environments. The solution proposed in those scenarios is based on MIPAMS (Multimedia Information Protection And Management System), a service-oriented Digital
Rights Management (DRM) platform, which enables the creation, registration and distribution of multimedia content in a secure way, respecting intellectual property rights. The particularity of the
mobile scenario with respect to others is the limited capability of mobile devices. A specific use case has been identified for the mobile environment and a new system, based on MIPAMS, has been designed for the electronic publishing environment.
