Title: What are we measuring when evaluating universities' efficiency?
Authors: Berbegal Mirabent, Jasmina; Solé Parellada, Francesc
Abstract: Globalisation and the knowledge-based society have driven universities to an intense competition for the best professors, researchers and students. Yet, rankings and reports measuring how universities perform are available in abundance. Among these assessment tools it is worth highlighting those based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), which since the 1980s have risen considerably. However, there is a lack of consensus when selecting the indicators that best represent the inputs and outputs of such institutions. Aiming to clarify how these proxies are chosen, this paper does an exhaustive review of the indicators used in DEA empirical studies in the last decade, classifying them according to their nature and use.

Title: Business model innovation in entrepreneurship
Authors: Trimi, Silvana; Berbegal Mirabent, Jasmina
Abstract: The goal of this paper is to advance the understanding of emerging developments in business model design within the field of entrepreneurship. It is widely known that during the start-up process, entrepreneurs need to set up the boundaries of the business and define the product/service to offer. This is a very complex task, especially for new technology-based companies which usually require large investments and have a limited time span (avoiding product obsolescence) to turn the idea into a full-time venture. Although business model design within the entrepreneurship field is a recent topic, it is gaining a growing attention in the literature. The usefulness and predictable power of business models are expected to help entrepreneurs make more informed decisions, thus increasing the chances of success. This article first tackles the specific problems faced by new technology-based firms, linking their needs with the advantages of having a flexible and well-designed business model. Second, different innovative practices aimed at improving business model design are discussed. The paper ends with some recommendations, stressing the need for future empirical work.

Brokering knowledge from universities to the marketplace: the role of knowledge transfer offices

Title: Brokering knowledge from universities to the marketplace: the role of knowledge transfer offices
Authors: Berbegal Mirabent, Jasmina; Sabaté i Garriga, Ferran; Cañabate Carmona, Antonio
Abstract: Purpose – This study aims to conceptualise the role of knowledge transfer offices (KTOs) as knowledge brokers (KBs) and identify which factors are most significantly related with their performance for supporting public-private research organizations (PROs), testing the authors' hypothesis for the Spanish case.
Design/methodology/approach – An empirical analysis is conducted based on data from RedOTRI 2008 annual report about 63 Spanish KTOs. A multiple lineal regression model is carried on each of the selected variables representative of KTOs' performance (number of priority patents, revenues from industry collaboration and number of spin-offs) in order to establish possible relationships with some factors related to the knowledge process that characterize KTOs' activity.
Findings – A theoretical framework conceptualizing the KTOs' role as knowledge brokers is suggested. Factors positively influencing KTOs' performance are PRO's total annual expenses, the type of PRO, the KTO age, the existence of a science park, the explicit regulation of intellectual property rights, the number of specialized full-time staff of the KTO and the availability of a patent stock.
Practical implications – The practical implication is the identification of those critical factors for the day-to-day operation of Spanish KTOs in their different ways of transferring knowledge, drawing managerial and organisational practices that may improve their performance.
Originality/value – This paper provides two original contributions for literature on knowledge transfer: a theoretical framework for the conceptualisation of KTOs as KBs, and the categorisation and further analysis of factors closely related to the performance of KTOs. A set of managerial implications for a better improvement of such institutions is presented.

Title: The pursuit of knowledge transfer activities: an efficiency analysis of Spanish universities
Authors: Berbegal Mirabent, Jasmina; Lafuente González, Esteban Miguel; Solé Parellada, Francesc
Abstract: This paper assesses university efficiency from a multidimensional perspective. First, an efficiency measure that incorporates knowledge transfer outputs in the objective function is proposed. Second, a cluster analysis complements the efficiency model giving a more comprehensive image of university’s performance. The empirical application considers the Spanish higher education system during 2006-2009. Results point to the presence of heterogeneous orientations among Spanish universities and
that they integrate knowledge transfer in their operations at different intensities. The findings give evidence that university’s efficiency and their involvement in knowledge transfer is conditioned by regional factors related to technological development and entrepreneurial culture. Results give ammunition to the argument that effective support policies should have the capacity to be customized to fit the profile of the targeted universities and regions.

Title: Knowledge transfer and spin-off performance in Spanish universities
Authors: Berbegal Mirabent, Jasmina; Lafuente González, Esteban Miguel; Solé Parellada, Francesc
Abstract: The main objective of the study is to examine whether certain factors linked to institutional capabilities as well as financial, human capital and infrastructure attributes have an impact on the creation of university spin-offs in Spain. We tested this using a negative binomial regression and a cluster analysis on a sample of 45 public Spanish universities for the year 2008. Our results reveal that the accumulated knowledge derived from previous experience in spin-off creation matters, giving support to the argument about the presence of knowledge spillovers linked to the creation of spin-offs. We also find that universities more actively involved in patenting create more spin-offs. Throughout our analysis we identified different patterns followed by Spanish universities in terms of knowledge transfer activities: universities actively involved in knowledge transfer activities, universities lacking an entrepreneurial culture that bridges the gap between research and academic entrepreneurship, and universities that need to consolidate their research and their entrepreneurial culture. Mimicking policies in different institutional settings without the proper adaptation do not help knowledge transfer activities within universities. Rather, policies aimed at improving knowledge transfer activities should be designed according to the specific profile of the targeted group of beneficiaries.

Title: The entrepreneurial orientation-dominant logic-performance relationship in new ventures: an exploratory quantitative study
Authors: Montiel Campos, Héctor; Nuño De la Parra, José Pablo; Solé Parellada, Francesc
Abstract: Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) has received substantial conceptual and empirical attention, representing one of
the few areas in entrepreneurship research in which a cumulative body of knowledge is developing. Nonetheless,
an important message from past research is that simply examining the direct effect of EO on firm performance
provides an incomplete picture, especially in the case of new ventures. This study examined the influence of
Dominant Logic (DL) on the relationship between EO and firm performance. Results based on a sample of 149
new manufacturing ventures indicated that DL mediates the EO-performance relationship, and risk taking,
aggressiveness and innovativeness had the highest correlations with the internal and external conceptualization
of DL. The empirical evidence suggests that new ventures must foster DL implementing appropriate strategic
processes in order to maximize the effect of EO on performance.

Authors: Berbegal Mirabent, Jasmina; Sabaté i Garriga, Ferran; Cañabate Carmona, Antonio
Abstract: Purpose – This study conceptualises the role of Knowledge Transfer Offices (KTOs) as Knowledge Brokers (KBs) and identifies which factors are most significantly related with their performance for supporting Public-private Research Organizations (PROs), testing our hypothesis for the Spanish case.
Design/methodology/approach – An empirical analysis is conducted based on data from RedOTRI 2008 annual report about 63 Spanish KTOs. A multiple lineal regression model is carried on each of the selected variables representative of KTOs’ performance (number of priority patents, revenues from industry collaboration and number of spin-offs) in order to establish possible relationships with some factors related to the knowledge process that characterize KTOs’ activity.
Findings – A theoretical framework conceptualizing the KTOs’ role as knowledge brokers is suggested. Factors positively influencing KTOs’ performance are PRO’s total annual expenses, the type of PRO, the KTO age, the existence of a science park, the explicit regulation of intellectual property rights, the number of specialized full-time staff of the KTO and the availability of a patent stock.
Practical implications – The identification of those critical factors for the day-to-day operation of Spanish KTOs in their different ways of transferring knowledge, drawing managerial and organisational practices that may improve their performance.
