// In the last decade both the Catalan cities as the rest of Spain, has undergone major changes in their physical and social morphology due to the arrival of large immigrant populations. This population is located in specific areas of our cities and has a residential settlement patterns different from the native population. Furthermore, the characteristics of their homes and their use of public space are different from the rest of the population. This paper will delve into the use by the immigrant population of public space in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, what public spaces and what equipment they use and if they fit their daily needs, what variables have the greatest impact in this application (age, gender, origin), as this population interacts with the rest of the neighborhood population, and what kinds of uses made of public space, and how are the physical and social space .... It will try to detail more succinctly what characteristics housing for this population: how are their homes and how to access it. The territorial scope of the research is the metropolitan area of Barcelona. The research is conducted in different districts of the RMB with different urban and demographic characteristics, but they have in common that have a concentration of immigrant population than the average of the RMB. The methodology is a combination of quantitative and qualitative.

Title: Projecte de Vehicle Elèctric Accessible (VEA)
Authors: Bordas Eddy, Marta; Sánchez, Samuel; Usandizaga Calparsoro, Miguel M.
convencional.

Title: Accessible heritage
Authors: Bordas Eddy, Marta; Usandizaga Calparsoro, Miguel M.
Abstract: LOCUS –“Let’s Open Cities for Us” is an Erasmus Intensive Program that analyzes
the problems related to mobility and accessibility within historic centers characterized by steep complicated topographic sites and with important patrimonial inheritance. The interest resides
in solving accessibility in constructed environments where any intervention is object of most reluctant judgments. The aim is to improve the relationships between architecture and society: architects must design an environment suitable for all individuals equally; not only thinking
those with different capabilities as “special cases”, limiting them to special accesses, restricted spaces and alternative itineraries to reach their destinations. The objective of giving equal access regardless different people’s capacities and without attempting on the city’s heritage is to research on an intelligent architecture able to solve individual needs globally and conceive an accessible environment capable to stimulate all senses, able to provide the perception of beauty and harmony by everybody.

Retailing and proximity in a liveable city: the case of Barcelona public markets system

Title: Retailing and proximity in a liveable city: the case of Barcelona public markets system
Authors: Guàrdia Bassols, Manuel; Oyón Bañales, José Luis; Fava, Nadia
Abstract: Retailing and especially food retailing has always been a fundamental element for the organization of the compact and more liveable city furthering the relations of proximity. From the nineteenth century specially the system of public markets acquired very considerable importance and was considered one of the basic service of metropolis in the urban planning policy.
Despite this, liberal policies, new modes of transportation, delivery and selling, along with suburban growth and the relative commercial “sprawl”, arising first in the cities in northern Europe and in the United States, undermined the development and conservation of this traditional public element, associated intimately with the compact city. In some southern and eastern European cities, markets are still functional landmarks. In Barcelona they have proven their considerable urban potential. In the 1980s, the extensive network of neighbourhood markets were seen as very effective focal points for restructuring a retail sector. Since then, municipal intervention in the reorganization of the city’s markets and their immediate surroundings has formed part of an urban planning vision integrated into the defence of the neighbourhood structure, of close contact and, definitely, of the compact city. Barcelona has a clear policy of limiting oligopolies, and large commercial areas are seen as a threat to the equilibrium that allows for the coexistence of the traditional city and a high population density which helps to support public spending for the construction and administration of public markets, but also to enjoy the derived benefits.

Title: Urban social movements: gender approaches
Authors: Muxí Martínez, Zaida; Magro Huertas, Tania
Abstract: At the end of the 60’s the so called Urban Social Movements were groups that coming from different locally rooted entities or associations, asked for new approaches to planning that meant taking care of people’s needs and memories.
As a result of the experience that came from the gendered division of work, duties and spaces women had a deep and broad knowledge of the urban circumstances. At the very beginning of the Urban Social Movements in Barcelona we could find women’s meetings where they asked for better condition of living, claiming for better and safer public spaces, more public facilities for daily life and better public transport, all of these with the aim to allow everyone, but specially women, to conciliated public, personal and family life.

Catalonian neighbourhood development law: the gender perspective as a planning tool

Title: Catalonian neighbourhood development law: the gender perspective as a planning tool
Authors: Muxí Martínez, Zaida; Ciocoletto, Adriana
Abstract: The Catalonian Law 2 / 2004, improvement for districts, urban areas and villages that require special attention, has been a leading tool to start developing an urban planning with a gender perspective. The point 6 of the law is about the promotion of equal opportunities in the use of public facilities and public spaces by the means of urban renovation.
A comparative analysis of a selection of the proposals submitted so far, and an on-site analysis of the projects already completed will permit to draw the evolution of the application of gender perspective on urban planning. Summing up, this research could be the opportunity to review what has been done and how, giving as result new recommendations for next interventions to be applying the gender perspective in urban planning.
