Use of robust methods to determine quadratic surfaces: application to heritage

Title: Use of robust methods to determine quadratic surfaces: application to heritage
Authors: Núñez Andrés, María Amparo; Buill Pozuelo, Felipe; Regot Marimón, Joaquín Manuel; Mesa Gisbert, Andrés de
Abstract: 3D surveys of archaeological elements and the construction of virtual models enable us to reconstruct historical sites. They provide useful data to select specific building processes.

Photogrammetry and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) are the most common techniques to obtain synthetically heritage models. These techniques provide massive data which can only be managed by replacing them by primitive shapes, thereby obtaining more simple models and the explicit geometry of the element. Statistical and robust methods are used for this substitution, thereby avoiding the common errors due to measuring. Of these methods, the most widely used are the least-median-of-squares (LMedS) and the RANSAC method.

Another computation method consists in recursive processes based on evolutive-type algorithms to adjust the model to the data captured.

This paper describes two surface computation methodologies to determine the modelling of a column shaft located in temple G of the archaeological park of Selinunte (Sicily).

Lighting simulation in augmented reality scenes. Teaching experience in interior design

Title: Lighting simulation in augmented reality scenes. Teaching experience in interior design
Authors: Sánchez Riera, Alberto; Redondo Domínguez, Ernesto; Fonseca Escudero, David
Abstract: One of the weaknesses in augmented reality (AR)
scenes is that, most of the times, the virtual model lacks realism
and is not integrated sufficiently into the scene to be credible. The
problem lies in lighting conditions differences from real
environment and virtual objects superimposed. This problem
takes on special significance indoors, to visualize interior design
proposals, because a non-integrated scene may seem unlikely and
unattractive. In this paper, we describe a teaching experience
conducted in the framework of an interior design specialization
course. It was carried out by students from the School of
Building Construction of Barcelona in November 2011, at the
Polytechnic University of Catalonia. Students were required to
use AR freeware tools for modeling and visualize their own
proposals indoor. The challenging task was to make virtual
objects blend harmoniously into the real scene, so they should
appear as if they were like real. New modeling techniques have
been experienced in order to add lighting conditions maps to
virtual objects. We used for that radiance and global illumination
simulations from the real environment to get real scene lighting
information. Experience was useful to determine the consistency
of illumination between the virtual objects and the surrounding
real objects in the scene, as well as, to evaluate the importance of
the use of this technology in interior design proposals and
architectural visualization.

Title: La identificación de una gramática formal a través del modelado digital
Authors: Etchegaray Heidrich, Felipe; Redondo Domínguez, Ernesto
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the use of digital modeling as dentification instrument of a formal grammar. The identification is developed through the analysis of some furniture, in which it is used a formal grammar identification
as a means to find out and generate a project language. This language construction is based on the grammar that generates forms which correspond to the same language, through the recursive application of a set of rules. Thus, the paper tries to identify a specific grammar for the furniture through its digital modeling.
